Brown Hands Literacy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate Black and Brown children and families about HBCUs in inner city neighborhoods while also building a love for literacy through Black children's books. We also aim to improve the youth's mental health. Welcome to Brown Hands Literacy - your premier destination for all things related to literacy and HBCUs. We are on a mission to promote literacy and HBUCs in the community, especially in underserved areas. Our founder, Latoya Turner who is a Central State University graduate was inspired to create this organization to build a love for literacy through diverse children’s books, free literacy events and bring awareness to the rich history of HBCUs. Latoya is the author of the children’s books Brown Hands, White Sand and Brown Hands, Black Schools: HBCUs. As a proud member of the HBCU community, we believe that representation matters, and we strive to provide books that reflect the diversity of our community. Our organization was started by a former early childhood teacher, Latoya Turner who witnessed the gaps in literacy that existed in the community and was determined to make a difference. We offer a wide range of services aimed at enhancing literacy skills and opening doors to a brighter future such as HBCU literacy experiences, book drives, author visits, literacy events. We are excited to announce that Brown Hands, Black Schools: HBCUs children’s book is being turned into an animation. We also recognize the importance of representation, which is why we focus on books by and about people of color. We welcome anyone who shares our passion for literacy and learning. Please follow us on social media in order to learn more about the dope work that we have done and continue to do.

We had an incredible time celebrating Black Empowerment Day at the Cincinnati Museum Center, highlighting the importance of literacy and art last Saturday. I had the pleasure of reading my children’s book Brown Hands, Black Schools: HBCUs, and sharing details about my exhibit HOME as well as my organization, Brown Hands Literacy. Christian Drye’s artwork Hillman is featured in the exhibit, which highlights and he led a painting workshop in KidSPACE. Gold Olympic Medalist Mary Wineberg, OLY, read her children’s book I Didn’t Win, while As Told by Foundation, thanks to founder Arin Gentry, MA, gave away free books. Kayla Miller M.Ed., founder of Everybody is LITT Academy, also shared information about their tutoring services. It was an enriching and empowering day for all!
