It’s important to us to provide our residents with the skills and tools they need to take ownership of and properly care for their homes! These skills are necessary for our residents as they work toward independence. We are looking for used lawnmowers and weed wackers for our residents to practice property maintenance. We are so thankful for the wonderful volunteers from Traders Point Christian Church who helped us clean our community garden last week! We started our community garden last May, and it's been a huge success! The garden is a source of fresh food and flowers and provides a dedicated space for gathering in our neighborhood. These volunteers helped us clean it up, prepare for spring, and do some landscaping on our nearby properties. The Indiana Department of Correction defines recidivism as “a return to incarceration within three years of the offender’s date of release from a state correctional institution.” Many factors contribute to an individual’s recidivism, including a lack of support, community, and stability. Brookside Reentry seeks to eliminate these barriers so that our participants can have the resources they need to reenter society with stability and community. Through our programming, we provide resources, accountability, and a pathway toward personal, spiritual, and communal revitalization. We have successfully reduced the recidivism rate for our participants to 6%, compared to the average 36% recidivism rate in our area. ?January is Poverty Awareness Month? Poverty is the reality for many people living in the Brookside neighborhood. Over 25% of our community lives in poverty, with a Median Household Income of $35,000 less than the Indianapolis average. Our community’s poverty struggles go beyond just finances. High crime rates, a lack of available housing, and few educational opportunities contribute to the cycle of generational poverty that so many of our neighbors feel trapped in. Brookside CDC provides life-changing services that minister to all types of poverty. We help people move past a mentality of survival to one of stability, ultimately breaking the cycle of generational poverty.
