Recap from Wednesday’s Resiliency & Sustainability Council Meeting!🌍🤝 7 ACTION ITEMS FROM SALTY URBANISM BY JEFFREY HUBER Action 1: Rather than fighting unavoidable environmental changes, businesses should plan for a transition to a “waterworld economy.” Miami’s unique subtropical location can support new economic opportunities in tourism, agriculture, and water-based industries, much like Venice and Amsterdam have thrived with their water-integrated economies. Action 2: Invest in water-resistant building materials upfront (like adding crystallizing agents to concrete at only a 2% cost increase) to dramatically reduce long-term maintenance costs and insurance premiums - one developer saved $900,000 annually on flood insurance by implementing resilient design strategies. Action 3: When developing new properties or renovating existing ones, design flexible ground floors that can transition over time - this protects property values by allowing buildings to adapt to rising street levels and changing flood conditions while maintaining functional upper floors. Action 4: Support the transfer of development rights programs that allow property owners to build denser developments on higher ground in exchange for converting low-lying areas to flood-management features. This creates new real estate opportunities while protecting existing investments. Action 5: Replace high-maintenance decorative landscaping with native plants that can handle both wet/dry conditions - this reduces maintenance costs, eliminates costly plant replacement after flood events, and can reduce stormwater management fees by naturally handling water absorption. Action 6: When developing in historic districts like Miami Beach, design new buildings that reference the surrounding Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern context while incorporating resilient features. Use traditional courtyard layouts raised above flood elevation, incorporate elevated walkways, and engage breeze blocks that provide both passive cooling and visual connection to architectural heritage. Such an insightful presentation by faculty Lawrence Scarpa who talked about the focus of his latest book Salty Urbanism. Addressing very current and pressing issues, Salty Urbanism is an exhibition of research that examines the wicked problem of sea level rise and flooding in coastal cities. It presents research models that accommodate a variety of best management practices (BMP), low impact development (LID), green infrastructure (GI), and other alternative concepts to be implemented over time in the neighborhood adaptation plan. Lawrence Scarpa has garnered international acclaim for the creative use of conventional materials in unique and unexpected ways. He is also considered a pioneer and leader in the field of sustainable design. #Brooks_Scarpa #USCArchitectureFaculty #USCArchitectureLecture
