We were REAL honored and SIMPLY thrilled to be part of the dream team of best in class designers recruited by Real Simple magazine to collectively renovate and redesign a historic brownstone in Brooklyn for their REAL SIMPLE Home 2024. Our Design/Build team was tasked with turning the neglected backyard into a beautiful and useful space. We created multiple gathering areas through the addition of new landscaping-including a wide variety of of native species- along with various forms of hardscaping. To quote our own Travers Martin, lead landscape designer on the project: “As designers working within the dynamic context of New York City, we hope to seek harmony within the built environment which frames our installations, while simultaneously engaging the urbanites, animals and the natural systems that breathe life into any landscape.?Simply put, we’re big fans of birds, pollinators, people, food, parties, dancing and bouquets, and we hope to incubate all of these elements in a way that respects the climate, city code and the client’s budget.” photo by Kelly Marshall/styling by Sophia Pappas #RSHome2024

Did you know we routinely host team retreats, workshops and outings on our rooftop farms and in our event spaces? It's a fun, unique way to bring your colleagues together, get your hands dirty (if you want!) and stimulate creative thinking. But don't take our word, read what West Side Campaign Against Hunger said about their recent offsite with us: "What I can say about my time at Brooklyn Grange was that it was an amazing experience because I was able to learn about the way food grows and the important work your organization does every day. I picked tomatoes and hot peppers which was so cool but also hard work. Not only did I bond with my colleagues but gained a deeper appreciation for farmers and what they endure. It's also just a beautiful space on that rooftop with amazing views." - Ivanna, West Side Campaign Against Hunger Want to learn more? Read up here: https://lnkd.in/egDZFYRp

ON ANOTHER PANEL ABOUT CLIMATE, THEY ASK ME TO SELL THE FUTURE AND ALL I’VE GOT IS A LOVE POEM By Ayisha Siddiqa What if the future is soft and revolution is so kind that there is no end to us in sight. Whole cities breathe and bad luck is bested by a promise to the leaves. To withstand your own end is difficult. The future frolics about, promised to no one, as is her right. Rage against injustice makes the voice grow harsher yet. If the future leaves without us, the silence that will follow will be an unspeakable nothing. What if we convince her to stay? How rare and beautiful it is that we exist. What if we stun existence one more time? When I wake up, get out of bed, my seven year old cousin with her ruptured belly tags along. Then follows my grandmother, aunts, my other cousins and the violent shape of their drinking water. The earth remembers everything, our bodies are the color of the earth and we are nobodies. Been born from so many apocalypses, what's one more? Love is still the only revenge. It grows each time the earth is set on fire. But for what it’s worth, I’d do this again. Gamble on humanity one hundred times over Commit to life unto life, as the trees fall and take us with them. I’d follow love into extinction

So proud and excited to be helping Conrad New York Downtown'sustainability efforts reach new heights!
Sustainability has always been integrated into Conrad New York Downtown’s design, operation, and culture. After a long hiatus, we’re extremely proud to finally have revitalized our rooftop garden, one of our most dynamic efforts in sustainability. Thanks to our strategic partnership with Brooklyn Grange, one of the nation’s leading green roof and urban farming companies, our rooftop garden is thriving and reaching new heights for our on-property farming efforts. The garden, which had been dormant since the COVID pandemic, has resumed producing fresh, urban-farmed ingredients for our restaurant operations. This initiative also proactively invites Conrad New York Downtown Team Members to get involved by volunteering to provide support for the Brooklyn Grange farmers through gardening, weeding, etc. Taking our efforts one step further, surplus produce will also be donated to Children's Aid NYC’s GO!Healthy program.
