  • Research frequently shows that “aging at home” is the senior living preference for a majority of older adults. Yet some decide that a retirement community, such as moving to an LPC (life plan community, aka continuing care retirement community), better meets their long-term senior living goals. Among those who choose an LPC, many cite access to a full continuum of care services as a top selling point. In fact, according to a number of consumer surveys conducted by myLifeSite over the years, “access to care” is typically the number one reason that people choose an LPC over other senior living options, including staying in the home. However, there are other factors that may hold people back from making a decision about a retirement community like an LPC or cause them to delay their move to one, according to our most recent survey data. Not surprisingly, near the top of that list is not wanting to leave the comfort and independence of their existing home (37.3% of respondents). But number one on the list of things that hold people back is concern about cost and the long-term affordability of living in an LPC or other type of retirement community (41.3% of respondents). Is aging at home really cheaper? We often hear people say that, while they would like to move to an LPC, they believe staying in their home will be less expensive on a month-to-month basis. But is this actually the case? Maybe, maybe not. Read On: https://lnkd.in/e-2jnPkY —Article courtesy of MyLifeSite #LifePlanCommunities #CCRCs #SeniorLiving #Retirement

  • It’s the Special Olympics, and Cold Cook Prep Team Member Stephanie Stein competes in four sports! Stephanie, who has been at Broadmead for three years, got involved in the Special Olympics in 2008, when her friends suggested she join them on a bowling team. She hasn’t looked back. She has since moved on to basketball, soccer, swimming, and is now planning on playing bocce ball. On top of all of this, she participates in the Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge, which benefits Special Olympics. The Special Olympics athlete’s oath is: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” Stephanie has won many first-, second-, and third-place medals over the years. She participates because it’s fun as well as great exercise. The camaraderie and working toward common goals is important, and she finds that the teamwork makes it a satisfying way to spend her free time. She also volunteers at state Special Olympics events in between her athletic appearances. She volunteered at the Disney World Special Olympics USA Games in 2022, and plans on doing the same at the World Games in 2026 in Minnesota. Stephanie has also joined The Arc, which aids those with developmental disabilities, where she participates in the leadership program. Other athletes look to her for guidance, which she cheerfully provides. Along with her equally cheerful Broadmead service, mostly in the Holly Terrace, it’s easy to see how she inspires others to give their best while enjoying themselves. —Written by Sharon McKinley #SpecialOlympics #SpecialOlympicsMaryland

Dear Friends — History has shown us that courage is not the absence of fear, but the determination to press forward despite it. As we honor Women’s History Month, we reflect on the bold and steadfast women who have shaped our world—not for recognition, but because they knew the work had to be done. For generations, women have defied the odds, confronted injustice, and carried the weight of change on their backs. With steady hands and determined hearts, they have made their mark through bold leadership and quiet resistance, building institutions and nurturing communities. We see this same spirit alive at Broadmead—in the wisdom of those who came before, the leadership guiding us today, and the voices shaping our future. It is evident in the strength of our residents, whose lives tell stories of fortitude and quiet revolution, and in our team members, whose dedication ensures our community remains one of dignity and progress. Women’s History Month is not just about looking back, it is about celebrating the living history unfolding among us. Quaker women have long embodied the principles of truth, equality, and justice, standing at the forefront of abolition, suffrage, and peace movements because their faith compelled them to act. They understood then—as we must now—that creating a better world requires courage, tenacity, and an unwavering commitment to what is right. This month, let us ask ourselves: ?? What barriers still exist for women today, and how can we break them? ?? Whose stories remain untold, and how do we bring them forward? ?? How can we ensure inclusion is not just a value, but a lived practice? History is shaped not just by extraordinary moments, but by the daily choices we make—to speak, to uplift, and to push forward even when the road is uncertain. Let’s honor Women’s History Month with reflection and action, carrying forward the boldness, brilliance, and boundless hope of the women who have led us this far. With purpose and gratitude, Jay D. • ?? Padonia International Elementary School’s principal Daniel Pizzo might now believe in magic after seeing what a group of Broadmead residents has done for his school. While some members of Broadmead’s Student Support Volunteer Project continue to volunteer in classrooms, many others have: helped out at a book fair and a health fair; knitted hats, scarves and sweaters for students; and donated school supplies. They hung an art show at Broadmead highlighting students’ Halloween drawings. They reorganized a cluttered teacher supply closet and fixed up the “cottage”— a mobile classroom filled with used clothing, school supplies, toys, games and non-perishable food. They also deliver food to the school on the second Saturday of each month for distribution to the school’s families. They also have plenty of plans for future projects. “Without the volunteers, we would struggle to effectively and efficiently serve the students and families with the support that we do,” said Daniel Pizzo. “The Broadmead volunteers provide immediate support to families and students, which supports their ability to focus on learning.” The idea for the project began about a year ago when residents Marion Baker, Cindy Sugatt and Sandy Angell, who all have backgrounds in education, looked for volunteer opportunities outside of Broadmead. They discovered nearby Padonia International Elementary School—home to some 500 students from 30 countries. About one-quarter of them participate in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). “The school doesn’t have a PTA, so we spent the past year saying ‘Yes’ to whatever they asked,” Sandy Angell said. The initiative soon became an official BRA activity called the Student Support Volunteer Project. Dear Friends: Black History Month is not just a moment on the calendar—it is a clarion call to recognize, reflect, and revere the extraordinary legacy of Black resilience, brilliance, and creativity. It is a reminder that history does not merely exist in textbooks or museums; it is alive in our conversations, our choices, our commitments to justice and belonging. At its core, Black history is American history, and American history is Black history. You cannot separate the two. From the literary genius of James Baldwin to the scientific ingenuity of Katherine Johnson, from the moral clarity of Dr. King, Black history is a testament to the enduring spirit of a people who refused to be silenced, erased, or contained. But let’s bring this closer to home—to Broadmead, to the very fabric of our community. Every resident here carries a story, a lesson, a lived experience that enriches us all. Every team member who dedicates their time and energy to making this space more inclusive, more vibrant, and more welcoming is a part of this living legacy. Let us embrace the complexity of history, recognizing both its triumphs and its unfinished work. Because Black history is not just about where we’ve been, it is about where we are going. And where we are going, Broadmead, is forward. With deep respect and gratitude, Jay D. Prince, President & CEO Parker Suddeth, Director of Culture & Belonging #BlackHistoryMonth #CultureAndBelonging #BlackHistory #Inclusion
