    Nothing increases distraction and decreases focus like a large backlog… * Except for an office ;) Left unchecked, a backlog (like a to-do list) will continue to grow, constantly adding more than can ever be done. The larger the backlog, the less focused the team is on delivering the right outputs of value to achieve desired outcomes. While some would suggest eliminating backlogs completely, there’s a far less drastic approach. Take this time before the New Year to DEEP clean your backlog, whether it’s a: ?? Product Backlog? ?? Project Backlog ?? To-do List Fewer things mean less distraction and more focus, which increases the likelihood of getting the most important things done faster. Never heard of DEEP? It’s a backlog management technique that’s been around for a while. ?? Detailed appropriately ?? Estimated ?? Emergent ?? Prioritized It’s a brilliant way to keep your backlog clean, lean, and focused, giving teams the best chance of hitting goals. Here I’ve updated DEEP for modern agile practices ?? ??     The entire purpose of company culture is to: ?? Inspire motivation ?? Foster innovation ?? Boost engagement RTO mandates have the opposite effect. You don’t need an office to create a positive culture: You need: ?? Trust ?? Transparency? ?? Teams (autonomous & aligned) And not just listed as values on the company website and in the employee handbook. You also need compensation systems that reward these values, ideally at the team level, driving cooperation and collaboration. What you don’t need are command and control RTO mandates. Control cripples motivation, stifles innovation, and kills engagement. According to the latest Gallup insights, fully on-site employees are only 28% engaged in their work. (see graph in comments) Inspiration, innovation, and engagement come from a culture of trust, not control. #remotework

    Here’s why RTO mandates shouldn’t be a surprise: Most senior business leaders only know how to run office-based companies. Office environments are what they’re used to. This is what Marten Mickos, HackerOne CEO, had to say in one of my previous posts: “As for companies requiring employees to show up at an office, I fully understand it and have fully expected it.? Firstly, most senior business leaders grew up in office-centric business environments (and if they are CEOs they report to boards with even older people). They don't know how to run a distributed org. So they do what's rational to them: ask everyone else to be in the office too.“ You don’t know what you don’t know, and the benefits of remote might not be for every company. For remote and distributed organizations to succeed, management styles and the tools and systems to support autonomous teams must evolve. What are your thoughts? #remotework?

    You’ve heard me talk a lot about the benefits of remote work. Having been remote and distributed for nearly a decade, I’ve seen how well it can work. The pandemic introduced the entire world to remote work. For most, once you’ve experienced remote work, it seems obvious… “Why haven’t we been working like this all along?” For someone like myself, who has worked from anywhere distributed across multiple time zones for years before the pandemic, The debates around: -> Onsite -> Hybrid -> Remote -> RTO mandates are all secondary to creating tremendous value with relatively small distributed teams. This is why, pre-pandemic, I didn’t even think of myself as a remote worker; I thought of myself as a member of a high-performing team that just happened to be spread around the world. It’s technologically feasible to work from anywhere, distributed and asynchronously, and it has been for a long time. Companies that create the most value with small cross-functional teams win. Period. The physical location of the team members should no longer be a factor.
