In Myanmar, buildings and bridges have been destroyed, roads and airports are damaged, and telecommunications are down. While nearly 800km from the epicentre in Bangkok, high-rise evacuations took place as a skyscraper under construction collapsed in the Chatuchak district. • Illustration of runner alongside the text which reads "Taking part in a marathon or running challenge this year? Here are our top first aid tips to keep in mind."
    • The title text highlighted in red at the top of the slide reads "Strains and sprains". The text that follows reads:
"Strains and sprains are injuries to soft tissues like muscles, tendons and ligaments. You may experience pain, swelling, bruising or difficulty moving the injured area.

How to treat strain or sprain:
1. Sit down and, if possible, support the injured part in a comfortable position. A raised position can help minimise pain, bruising and swelling.
2. Cool the area with a cold compress for up to 20 minutes. In a race situation, you might improvise with a piece of clothing soaked in cold water.
3. If the pain is severe, you may need to arrange a hospital visit."
    • The title text highlighted in red at the top of the slide reads "Dehydration". The text that follows reads:
"Dehydration happens when fluid and essential salts are lost from the body without being replaced. It can lead to cramps, dizziness or fatigue. Although there are simple things to help with dehydration, if it goes untreated, it can become very severe as the body loses more and more fluid and heats up uncontrollably.

How to prevent dehydration:
1. Drink water regularly throughout the race. Hydration stations are typically available every few miles.
2. Look for electrolyte or isotonic drinks which also replenish essential salts, as well as fluids, if you're sweating heavily."
    • The title text highlighted in red at the top of the slide reads "Blisters". The text that follows reads:
"To avoid blisters, make sure to wear shoes that are worn in and comfortable. You can also use blister-specific tape or bandages on spots prone to blistering, like heels and toes, before you run.

What to do if a blister forms:
1. Don’t pop it!
2. Clean it gently with water and antiseptic wipes.
3. Cover it with a blister bandage or a clean, dry gauze pad to protect it while running.

Top tip: If you need any plasters during the marathon, stop at one of the first aid points where they should have these available."
    • The title text highlighted in red at the top of the slide reads "Emergency situations". The text that follows reads:
"If you or someone else is severely injured or in pain, it’s important to flag down a first aider to help. This could be any fellow runner who stops to assist, or you can find a marshal.

Large events usually have roaming first aiders and medics on bicycles. And check out the first aid support available at organised events beforehand, for your own peace of mind."

The text at the bottom of the page on a red background reads: "Download our first aid app. Be prepared by learning first aid, quickly and easily, through our app."

The increase in fighting and the pause in aid delivery in Gaza is a grave development that has left the lives of millions of people in the balance. The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is responding to the renewed hostilities across Gaza and will continue to work together to support all those affected by this conflict. People urgently need respite from hostilities, access to life-saving humanitarian aid, all remaining hostages to be released and for humanitarian and medical workers to be able to carry out their work unhindered and in safety
