I did a bit of volunteering for the British Lichen Society this weekend! Not something I ever thought I would be writing but their current president is my mum so not unsurprising! Here’s what I learnt about the experience. ?? Nature is beautiful. Getting outside in nature is very good for me and I’d forgotten it quite a bit this winter. Look at this beautiful lichen growing on an equally beautiful Cherry tree. ?? I didn’t think I could help because I can only identify 1 lichen! My piece in the puzzle is so tiny that I didn’t think it would be worth doing but I’m told that my little bit of knowledge and time is worthwhile. That feels great! There must be so many people that I speak to that must feel the same about Girlguiding – “I’d love to help but I can only do every other week” or “I wish I could help but I’m no good with numbers so I don’t ever want to be involved in the finances”. It actually feels great to be able to help and know I will never be asked to do any more than this little bit. ?? Motivations are important – I’ve always said that when recruiting volunteers but I’ve identified new motivations to add to my list! Who knew I would be so driven by maps and data? I knew that but did I think it would motivate me to cross into a field that I know NOTHING about? That was a surprise! ??♀? It’s very hard to say no to that personal invitation – I always say this too but I’ve seen it first hand now! I’ve often heard my mum talk about the BLS so I’m already warm to the charity as a whole. It turns out all it took was someone to match up my skills and a project. So let me introduce you to Xanthoria parietina – the only lichen I can identify and the topic of my new little project that should see me getting out and about a bit more.?
