"The Cheshire Observatory, which is operated by the British Geological Survey, has 21 boreholes, each 100m deep. Its job is to answer a question that could change how thousands of homes are heated: the temperatures below the surface of the Earth are higher than at ground level, so what’s the best way to tap into this constant source of warmth?" It was a pleasure to welcome Rhys Blakeley from The Times to our Cheshire Geoobservatory to discuss the potential of geothermal energy in the UK. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eAVrWJBf

关于我们
The British Geological Survey is a part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is its principal supplier of national capability in geoscience. It advances understanding of the structure, properties and processes of the solid Earth system through interdisciplinary surveys, monitoring and research for the benefit of society. It is the UK's premier provider of objective and authoritative geoscientific data, information and knowledge for wealth creation, sustainable use of natural resources, reducing risk and living with the impacts of environmental change. We are a world-leading geoscience centre for survey and monitoring, modelling and research and data and knowledge.

Did you know, a study by the British Geological Survey in 2015 estimated?that between 122,000 to 290,000 properties in England lie in areas at risk of groundwater flooding with a further 980,000 properties in areas where groundwater may play a role that are also at risk from river and/or coastal flooding? Project Groundwater, which is supported by BGS, has launched Darcy’s Tale - the latest short film following the establishment of the Let’s Talk Groundwater Flooding network - a new national initiative to bring together industry and community to share ideas and expertise and shape the future of flood reporting. Produced by Aardman, Darcy’s Tale is a beautifully animated story that raises awareness of groundwater flooding through the journey of a love-seeking mole. #DarcysTale #LetsTalkGroundwaterFlooding #FCRIP #GroundwaterMatters #Aardman #Animation

New foresight studies reveal that the UK may require as much as 40 per cent of the global lithium supply to meet anticipated demand by 2030. Published by the BGS-led UK Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre (CMIC), the studies quantify UK demand requirements and global supply challenges for materials required by technologies essential to the energy transition. The reports, which were commissioned by the Department for Business and Trade, identify risks that could result in bottlenecks in material supply due to limited UK-based supply chains, a reliance on international markets and growing global competition. All of which could have a detrimental impact on the economy. The approach taken to quantify demand for specific technologies, while also providing a comprehensive overview across various decarbonisation technologies, is unique. This methodology will enable the UK to make strategic decisions to enhance the security of the supply chains these technologies depend on. Great to see respected news outlets such as the Telegraph endorse the exceptional work of the British Geological Survey and the Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre (CMIC). Since its launch in 2022, CMIC's work has provided a detailed assessment of the UK's potential for critical minerals; including their global supply risk,?the UK's economic vulnerability and the potential for strengthening global and domestic supply chains. Well done to all involved in this project, especially CMIC director Gavin Mudd ?who is quoted in the article. https://lnkd.in/d2VNp4-y You can read the criticality assessment here:?https://lnkd.in/d-HjCmNe

Alongside Greyfriar's Bobby and the Scott Monument, Arthur's Seat is one of the most recognisable sights in Edinburgh. But have you ever considered what the hill is made of, or how it got there? To coincide with Edinburgh Science Festival, BGS is hosting a geological walk around Arthur's seat to give you all of the geological info about the area, from the Carboniferous Period (around 360 million years ago) to the present day. A joint study with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) has found the presence of harmful chemicals, including PFAs, in water sources across the southern Indian capital of Bengaluru. Twenty-five samples were collected from groundwater, local surface waters and tap water in the Cauvery Basin in eastern India. The samples were screened for around 1500 pollutants and 125 pollutants were identified. Medical and veterinary-based compounds, including antimicrobials, were the most prevalent, being found in around 60 per cent of samples. The results highlight the urgent need for improved water quality both in the city and across the country. https://lnkd.in/ebDipDG7

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Principal Hydrogeologist at BGS. The role will provide leadership and project management for UK hydrogeology within the groundwater group. The main focus will be leading and managing the BGS component of the NERC: Natural Environment Research Council FDRI Programme, the largest investment in UK hydrology for a generation providing innovative monitoring to help resilience to floods and droughts. The post will be located at our HQ in Nottinghamshire. Apply via the link below: https://lnkd.in/eA3psxzt

Today marks International Women’s Day. The progression of gender equality remains a top priority for BGS, as recognised when we achieved the Athena SWAN Silver award in November 2024. Having started our gender equality journey more than 10 years ago, we know that collaboration is key to advancing gender equality. This month we have had the privilege of collaborating with our counterpart geological surveys in both Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan to explore barriers to gender equality. This work forms part of a broader programme which is funded by UK International Development and focuses on strengthening the capacity of Central Asian geological surveys to support the energy transition BGS' EDI lead and Keely Mills and EDI Officer Maria Kariuki facilitated a series of workshops to reflect on the gender equality progress in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Our aim was to understand the current challenges faced by women in the geoscience sectors, focusing on topics such as social and cultural norms, career progression, bullying and harassment, and organisational commitment. These workshops not only provided a platform for exchanging experiences, but also empowered participants to identify practical strategies and best practices to help their organisations tackle gender equality gap. Moving forward, we aim to work alongside senior leaders in these organisations to assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of actions. Ultimately, through shared learning and collaboration, our goal is to contribute towards a more diverse and equitable workforce in geosciences, aligning with the broader vision of International Women’s Day and gender equality.
