Since I started working on consumer privacy tools a year ago, I've been fortunate to connect with great people like Nick Sullivan, Louise van der Peet, and Georgios Smaragdakis who are also thinking about how to make the internet better for users and companies. We recently drafted a proposal that provides a technical way for users to enforce their privacy on the internet, and a path for companies to have smooth and scalable compliance. BringYour has been in a quiet open preview for a few weeks, and over 300 people have tuned in and participated. Tons of people use VPNs each month (maybe ~5% of all internet users) but what value brings them back? The feedback is loud and clear: privacy and regional choice. What BringYour is doing to take both to the next level: - Privacy: Besides being more provably anonymous to avoid IP tracking, the BringYour network works 24x7 in the background to remove and protect your data, based on the actual data being sent from your devices to the cloud, deep knowledge of privacy policies, and your permission and oversight. This is in addition to enforcing best practices and modern technologies like blocking insecure content and secure DNS, and more coming. - Regional choice: BringYour is built from anyone with a phone, computer, or TV, participating for a greater good (and a revenue share). These are real places to digitally travel all over the world, that work just like your home (think AirBnb). Save some carbon and travel digitally next time ;) In a few years with new tools I think we’ll look back and realize we didn't have the tools and language to talk about privacy. The laws like CPRA can give Californians rights, but it doesn't have profound individual value if a normal person can’t, or even understand how to, assert those rights. Privacy is not a single technology but a relentless movement of law, technology, and choice. To choose something one must understand why, to see the invisible cause and effect. AI will have a large impact in this space because there is potentially nothing more tireless and thorough than AI. Also is VPN an outdated word?
