Community Internet Solutions welcomes Karen Lightman, Carnegie Mellon University, Executive Director, Metro21 and?Safety21 - US DOT National UTC, to our Board of Directors. Community Internet Solutions (CIS) is a 501c3 nonprofit, one of the country's first and only non-profit internet service providers. Our mission is to bridge the digital divide by providing affordable and reliable Internet access to Southwestern Pennsylvania's underserved communities. We deploy various solutions to deliver high-speed, reliable, private, and secure Internet to unserved and underserved communities, locally-owned businesses, and homes.?When communities struggle to connect to broadband, Community Internet Solutions accepts the task of taking on difficult connectivity challenges. To succeed in these challenges, we seek to develop long-term partnerships with community anchor institutions, including social service organizations, community organizations, workforce training centers, libraries, hospitals, and K-12 schools and universities. We then work with these groups to build sustainable and secure broadband Internet access. Karen is an internationally recognized leader in building and supporting communities based on emerging technologies. Her previous experiences will help us bolster the technical capabilities of our network and grow our ability to bring new and emerging technologies to serve those in the communities who have been left behind. Karen's knowledge of the intricacies of public infrastructure and her skills in building community coalitions will be crucial to helping CIS expand to and better serve more communities. We are excited to see the changes and assistance that Karen will bring to our mission.

Nobody knows communities like the Nonprofits that serve them. A great effort in Colorado!
Colorado used a creative strategy to gather federal Digital Equity Act data: The state?provided small vendor contracts to nonprofit community-based organizations?to conduct additional data-gathering among the populations they serve, such as immigrants and refugees. This recognized the longstanding relationships that nonprofits have worked to develop with community members, and saved state officials from trying to accomplish years of trust-building in a few short months.
