This is big. Brimstone was selected for a transformational $189 million investment by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Industrial Demonstration Program. No one knows more about decarbonizing our economy, or about what it will take to achieve global impact than DOE. By backing Brimstone’s commercial demonstration plant, the DOE has offered jet fuel to accelerate our scale-up and path to market. Since Day One, we’ve believed that decarbonizing cement requires developing a product identical to the industry-standard portland cement that builders everywhere know and trust. The process would need to be extremely low-carbon, and cost-competitive at full scale. DOE’s investment in Brimstone is a powerful validation of this approach and our work. After a highly competitive process, we’re thrilled to be among the 33 companies chosen to be part of the largest industrial decarbonization effort in U.S. history, one that will create clean jobs, transform sectors, and help spur an American-led clean industrial revolution. Let’s build. Decarbonizing cement—without changing the product or price
关于我们
Brimstone is on a mission to decarbonize the cement industry, which today is responsible for 7.5% of carbon emissions annually. Founded in 2019, Brimstone developed a breakthrough decarbonized process to produce the same ordinary portland cement and supplementary cementitious materials used today. These materials have the same quality and performance builders have trusted for decades — now with a positive climate impact.

If done right, book-and-claim systems—which allow companies to independently sell the environmental attributes associated with their products—can become a powerful tool for driving investment to the most impactful climate technologies and helping end users meet their net-zero goals. Speaking at Green Markets Day during New York Climate Week, Adam DiNardo, Head of Strategy and Business Development, offered Brimstone's perspective on the barriers to decarbonizing the cement industry—and the promise of book-and-claim as a catalyst for overcoming those challenges and commercializing transformational solutions. The discussion was moderated by Leslie Biddle, Deputy Undersecretary for Commercialization and Finance at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and included valuable insights from Andre de Fontaine, Senior Director of Programs at the Center for Green Market Activation (GMA); Heather House, Principal at RMI; Devon Lake, Head of Net Zero Strategy at Meta; William O'Donnell, Managing Director and Founder of Prologis Ventures; and David Perkins, Vice President of Government Affairs & Communications at Heidelberg Materials. Many thanks to Green Markets Day for hosting such an important conversation. #NYCW #NewYorkClimateWeek #IndustrialDecarbonization

CO2 emissions from cement production have more than doubled in the past 25 years—and as demand for cement continues to grow, these emissions could reach a staggering 3.8 billion tons annually. A new report from the World Economic Forum's First Movers Coalition and Deloitte outlines strategies for addressing cement’s climate problem, and the obstacles and opportunities to scale these solutions. Unlike many high-emission industries where energy use is the primary issue, over half of the emissions in cement and concrete production stem from the production process itself. As WEF notes, "The industry, therefore, needs either novel solutions to a millennia-old process or robust carbon capture strategies.” The report points to Brimstone’s technology, which uses a carbon-free feedrock to significantly reduce process emissions, as one promising approach to decarbonizing cement production. Brimstone is a proud member of the First Movers Coalition’s First Suppliers Club, a global initiative that connects suppliers and customers to bring deeply decarbonized technologies to market. Today’s the day! Catch Brimstone in "What's Next? The Future with Bill Gates," a new Netflix series that highlights the world’s most urgent challenges—and the people, companies, and organizations working to solve them. One of the biggest challenges? Climate change. And a major contributor is cement, responsible for 7.5% of global CO2 emissions. In the climate solutions episode, Netflix visited Brimstone’s Oakland R&D facility to see how we’re working to decarbonize cement production. As our co-founder and CEO Cody Finke, Ph.D. explained, "Concrete is this incredible material that has allowed us to build everything from skyscrapers to bridges to dams." But cement—the key ingredient in concrete—is a major polluter, "and the same thing has been done in the cement industry for 100-plus years." At Brimstone, we’re changing that. Our team has developed a new, deeply decarbonized process to produce the exact same material used today. Watch the episode "Can We Stop Global Warming?" to learn more about Brimstone's story, technology, and big-swing approach to tackling one of the planet’s biggest polluters. It's a formidable challenge, but we're in it for the long haul—and we're proud to be featured alongside other climate-tech innovators, including Mill, TerraPower, and Climeworks. https://lnkd.in/eErnsz8X

Each year, the MIT Technology Review recognizes outstanding innovators under 35 across a wide range of fields, from biotechnology and energy, to the Internet and sustainability. Guess who made this year's list? None other than Brimstone CEO Cody Finke, Ph.D. Such an honor to see Cody, Brimstone and our deeply decarbonized cement-making process recognized alongside other leaders and technologies with the potential to shape the coming decades. Globally, cement is responsible for 7.5% of carbon emissions annually. As Cody told Casey Crownhart, "Anyone who cares about climate should also care about cement." And it's great to see the subject starting to get the attention it deserves. https://lnkd.in/eFuhUgR3
