Firefighters have asked us if our Brimstone EV Fire Suppressor Blanket could also be used to cover a solar panel array to stop the generation of DC electricity. We weren't sure. So we did what we always do... We ran tests. ?? Here's what we found out. Based on a ground-mounted 6-panel solar array: Full voltage from array = approx. 119.0 volts DC (19.83 volts per panel)* When covered with 1 layer of EV material = reduced to 38.5 volts DC When covered with 2 layers of EV material (1 blanket folded over) = reduced to 15.4 volts DC ?? Our testing showed that when we covered the 6-panel array with two layers of our EV material, there was an 87.1% reduction in power output. Why is this important? ?? When firefighters respond to a structure on which there is a solar array, they can face the following challenges: ?? The building's electrical wiring may stay energized (from the solar panels) even if the service from the power company is disconnected. ?? Even when there is a disconnect option on the outside of a structure that stops the flow of energy into the building, and on newer systems can reduce the power upstream of the inverter to 1 volt DC per panel, the wiring on the back side of the solar panels can remain live. ?? Systems that are older, damaged, poorly maintained, or improperly installed may still allow the flow of current from the panels and through the inverter, potentially keeping all of the building's wiring live (with DC and/or AC electricity). ? The only sure way to stop the flow of energy from a solar panel is to block the light. *WARNING: According to OSHA, any direct current (DC) voltage of 50 volts or higher is considered hazardous. https://lnkd.in/ebfkK3PH #fireprotection #brimstone #firesuppression #lithiumion #batteries

Officials from Homeland Security Department and firefighters from across the country recently sat down together at a national symposium on e-bike lithium-ion battery fires that was hosted by FDNY. Their goal was to learn more about the science behind these fires and share information and best practices on how to better identify and combat them. “When we are arriving at the scene, these fires are usually very advanced because they ignite so quickly. These fires seem similar to what many of us see when it’s an arson,” said FDNY Fire Marshal Daniel Flynn. “Sometimes they’re so advanced we’re looking at it as if it was a gas pour. We have to standardize how the data is captured and cataloged.” According to the New York Daily News article, FDNY officials said that only 13 fires were attributed to batteries in 2019, when they first started tracking them, compared to the 44 battery-related fires that were identified in 2020. https://lnkd.in/eGn3v8cd #fireprotection #brimstone #firesuppression #lithiumion #batteries
