A spin-off of the Rich Earth Institute, BrightWater Tools develops building-scale wastewater nutrient recovery systems.
关于我们
Our tools enable buildings to recycle both water and nutrients on-site, unlocking the potential of bathrooms to produce resources instead of pollution. The nutrients in human “waste” are then processed in our system to become a sanitized, concentrated, high-value fertilizer to support local agriculture.

?? Technology Spotlight: Brightwater Pasteurizer ?? ??? ?? ??The Brightwater Pasteurizer reduces pathogens in wastewater by heating it to 80°C (176°F) for 90 seconds. This sanitizes urine according to US EPA regulations, unlocking new opportunities for community-scale peecycling. Integrated heat recovery reduces energy requirements to an average energy consumption of 120 Watts (similar to a standard desktop computer), or 15 Watt Hours per Liter of recovered fertilizer! ?? ????Laboratory analysis of urine treated with the Brightwater Pasteurizer at the Rich Earth Institute has shown that nitrogen losses through the pasteurization process are negligible. We installed our latest generation of technologies in the urine processing room at the University of Michigan College of Engineering G. G. Brown building with Nancy Love's Nutrient-Energy-Water Cycles research group. The building collects nutrients from a waterless urinal and LAUFEN Bathrooms Save! urine diverting toilet to fertilize the Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum - Pee on the Peonies! The system now includes an updated version of our pastuerizer and freeze concentrator - all fully automated & remote controlled! Thanks to Nancy Love for the photos of the room in 2018 and today - and to our Research Director Abraham Noe-Hays and Software Engineer gabriel kass-johnson for their work installing the system.
