Tell me you have no idea how nonprofits or government funding work without telling me. #Nonprofits #TellMeWithoutTellingMe #DOGE
President and CEO, National Council of Nonprofits Former President and CEO, National Low Income Housing Coalition (2016-2025)
If you have any doubt that the nonprofit sector faces an unprecedented existential threat, read this excerpt from yesterday’s Joe Rogan interview with Elon Musk, head of DOGE. Remember as you read - while his power is significant, ours is greater. When we unite to protect and advance the entire nonprofit sector, we are formidable, and we will win. From the interview: MUSK: Basically, government-funded NGOs are a way to do things that would be illegal if they were the government, but are somehow made legal if it's sent to a so-called nonprofit. But these nonprofits are then used to—people cash out these nonprofits. They become very wealthy through nonprofits. They pay themselves enormous sums through these nonprofits…It's a gigantic scam. Like one of the biggest, maybe the biggest scam ever. … ROGAN: And what are (NGO) requirements with (federal) money? What do they have to do? MUSK: There’s just really no requirements at all. ROGAN: So they just get grants and the government just assumes that they're doing good work? MUSK: I think a lot of people in the government know they're not doing good work. But they, it's a giant graft machine. … ROGAN: But do (nonprofits) do some good as well? MUSK: It does some good. So it's not like 0% good. If it was like... If it was really 0% good, it'd be much easier to attack. So there's going to be some percent good that they add in there. But it's like it might be 5% or 10% good, but 90, 95% not.

Thank you, National Council of Nonprofits, for fighting to ensure that nonprofits receive the funds they have been promised and deserve.
Our lawsuit against the Office of Management and Budget is ongoing, but to demystify the process we have created a timeline of the major updates. We are continuing to advocate for the protection of federal funding for nonprofits, so stay tuned for more updates as they come. For more background on why the National Council of Nonprofits is involved in the lawsuit, please check out our recent Advocacy in Action piece written by our President and CEO, Diane Yentel: https://lnkd.in/ew7caFCJ #Nonprofits #Lawsuit #CommunityImpacts

Gallup’s research across 52 countries reveals that the four leadership needs of followers — hope, trust, compassion and stability — are universal and enduring, even in a rapidly changing world. Of these, hope stands out as the most essential, with over half (56%) of all attributes linked to influential leaders in daily life speaking to the theme of hope. Hope motivates people by giving them something better to look forward to, helping them overcome challenges and build resilience. Without it, confidence fades, and engagement can suffer. Leaders in the workplace hold tremendous potential to influence lives. When leaders inspire hope, thriving rises by five percentage points, and suffering drops by three. Download our latest report to understand how to meet these needs and elevate your leadership. https://lnkd.in/gQQay85u

Nonprofits, buckle up – the Trump Administration’s Executive Orders have begun and ?? they ?? are ?? problematic?? ? In case you missed it (or were too busy actually doing the work that strengthens our communities), the Trump Administration just dropped a fresh batch of executive orders. Spoiler alert: nonprofits are in for a ride. ? Here’s what you need to know and do before and as the dust settles: 1?? DEI? What DEI? The new orders call for the complete elimination of federal DEI programs. That’s right, everything from equity-focused grants to agency training programs – poof, gone. If your nonprofit thrives on DEI partnerships, it’s time to rethink, retool, and maybe rage-advocate for inclusivity at every turn. 2?? Expect delays in and ghosting from federal grants and funding. With a hiring freeze, in-person work mandates, and a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), nonprofits depending on government grants and contracts should brace for bureaucratic gridlock. Start those tough convos with your government contacts now and push for streamlined processes where possible. 3?? Immigration crackdown will increase demand – and risk. New policies aim to identify and remove undocumented immigrants, cut funding to sanctuary cities, and eliminate birthright citizenship. If your nonprofit serves immigrant communities, expect increased demand – while facing potential funding cuts and scrutiny. Time to rally, strategize, and lawyer up. 4?? Misinformation boosting? Efforts to combat misinformation might now be seen as a free speech violation. Nonprofits focused on civic engagement and public information – keep your messaging tight and your legal team on speed dial. ? So, what can you do? ? Lean into your values and stand firm. Now is the time to double down on your organization’s mission and let your values guide decision-making, even when facing external pressures. ? Advocate like never before. Connect with your networks, policymakers, and funders to protect your work and to push back whenever and wherever possible. ? Diversify revenue streams. Now’s the time to strengthen private funding and partnerships. ? Stay informed. Follow trusted nonprofit advocacy groups, like the National Council of Nonprofits, for the latest updates (and maybe a few survival tips). ? Prepare for legal challenges. Many of these orders will face court battles – be ready to support efforts that align with your mission. Make sure to budget for this. ? There’s a tough road ahead, but nonprofits have always been resilient, and we’ll continue to roll up our sleeves and get to work (again and again and again). ? #Nonprofits #Advocacy #PolicyMatters #LeadershipInAction ?

We're delighted to sponsor the City of Seattle's efforts to increase rail safety and accessibility for its citizens through Railtowns!
Congratulations, City of Seattle! From regional Sounder Trains to Seattle's local Link Light Rail lines, Sound Transit's service consistently and safely gets visitors and Seattleites where they need to go, when they need to get there. Seattle's voters gave their rail transit safety and access a big YES this year! They chose to allocate $115mm to improvements and access to Light Rail and $9mm to passenger safety. These upgrades are expected to get more people safely to transit hubs, reduce transit delays, and their rail system is less likely to fall into costly disrepair. With this voter decision, Seattle can expect its transit system to continue to be a significant factor in retaining talent and business in the region. Brightside Advisors sponsored Seattle's 2025 Full Membership to Railtowns to support the city's efforts to increase safety and accessibility. Through this sponsorship, Seattle now has access to Railtowns' resources, best practices, and direct support. Brightside Advisors is a nonprofit consulting firm that helps organizations create an environment where your people can thrive in an innovative work culture and do their best work. The firm has expertise in strategic planning and goal setting, effective operational structures, HR strategy, and change management. Client results include enduring organizational systems and?processes that propel significant change and foster continuous learning and improvement. All Brightside Advisors' services are offered through individualized partnership and a constant focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Thank you, Brightside Advisors, for sponsoring Seattle! #RailInfrastructure #RailSafety #PassengerRail #railroad #railtowns

Textio recently released their 2024 report on language bias in performance feedback. Key findings include: ?? Men are 2-4 times more likely to be positively stereotyped in their feedback ?? Women are negatively stereotyped up to 7 times more than men ?? Women receive more personality-based feedback than men, regardless of performance level ?? Workers who get low-quality feedback - including positive feedback - in annual performance reviews are 63% more likely to quit their jobs within a year ?? People are more likely to internalize feedback that aligns with social stereotypes about their identity, creating a disproportionate disadvantage for people from the historically marginalized groups that have been most heavily penalized with negative stereotypes Managers: If you want to retain top talent, give specific, actionable, and clear feedback and avoid fixed-mindset or personality-based comments. HR leaders: If you’re finding that annual trainings haven’t reduced employee escalations, consider investing in tools that identify managers who need support—even if they’re not reaching out for help.

"That's the interesting thing about work stress. We don't really experience much of it at work - we're too busy. We experience it outside of work. When we're commuting. When we're at home. When we're trying to rejuvenate." There are helpful and productive ways to think about work outside of it, such as creative and problem-solving ways, which are in our control. To mitigate the potential for burnout and work-related emotional distress, we must be careful about how much we ruminate about work outside of work hours - how much we second-guess our decisions, worry about the future, or think about tasks we haven't gotten to yet. #Burnout #WorkLifeBalance #WorkStress
“Ruminating about work, replaying the same thoughts and worries over and over again, significantly disrupts our ability to recover and recharge in the off hours.” Here’s how to make sure you leave work at work:
