Happy Filipino American History Month! ?????? In 2009, the U.S. Congress officially designated October as Filipino American History Month, honoring the Filipino experience in American history that stretches back to 1587 (according to the National WWII Museum). Today, with around 4.1 million Filipino Americans, they form the second-largest Asian American ethnic group in the U.S. The rich diversity and immense contributions of Filipino Americans have shaped and enriched our society for centuries. From culture to history, their impact is immeasurable. ?? The early bird—or the early Triton—catches the worm! ?? This fall, our Rise Kohyang High School Tritons boarded buses at 5:30 AM to watch the sun come up on their final year in high school and very bright futures! At Vista Hermosa Natural Park, our school staff prepared a bagel bar for our students and had backyard games, arts & crafts, sports, and pre-made photo booth frames for pictures. Getting up before sunrise may not always be easy, but RKHS definitely made it worth their while! We love when our kohyang comes together — it's the foundation for our community to thrive. #seniorsunrise #classof2025

As part of our ongoing celebration of Latino/a/x/e Heritage Month at Bright Star Schools, we’re honoring incredible Latino/a/x/e leaders who have made a lasting impact on our society. Today, we’re spotlighting Ralph Lazo, a true trailblazer! During WWII, Ralph Lazo stood in solidarity with his Japanese American friends by voluntarily joining them in an internment camp—he was the only known non-spouse, non-Japanese American to do so. Later, he worked to raise funds for a class-action lawsuit that secured reparations for those unjustly interned. Ralph Lazo is proof that one person can make a difference! We proudly celebrate the diversity and contributions of Latino/a/x/e people this month and every day! #LatinHeritageMonth #CelebrateDiversity

Our schools at Bright Star Schools are state-recognized Community School candidates and we are thrilled about it! Through our Community School transformation, Bright Star’s schools have built out key aspects of the community schools model. As Community School candidates, we are able to evaluate our current offerings and listen to our families and community members to understand their needs so that we can bring valuable resources to meet them. Our newest partner, Vision to Learn, is one example of how our Community School Managers connect our students and families to community resources they need to thrive. They provide free vision, exams, and glasses for students at no cost across our Bright Star network. Vision to Learn recently visited Stella Elementary Charter Academy and Stella High Charter Academy to evaluate our students' vision and provide them with the tools and resources so they can be their best selves at school. We've also partnered with other incredible organizations, like St. John's Community Health and Didi Hirsch, to provide robust, wrap-around support to our students, families, and communities in all aspects of their well-being. We thank our Community School Managers for all they are doing to make our Bright Star community #BrightStarStrong! #CSMappreciationweek

We are filled with gratitude and appreciation after LAUSD Board District 1 staff members, Mrs. Hendy-Newbill and Ms. Romo, visited Stella Elementary Charter Academy before our charter renewal. During their visit to Stella Elementary's Marlton campus, they met with our Lead Executive Officer, Ana Martinez, our Chief Instructional Officer, Liliana Bustos Garcia, and had the opportunity to see great teaching and learning happening in our classrooms. We also had some of our dedicated parents participate in a panel for our special visitors. In partnership with our families, our teachers, support staff, and administrators work hard to ensure we meet the needs of our students. In addition to our students’ success, we are a committed community partner. We’re proud to be a state-recognized Community School candidate, and we appreciate the input and partnership from our board district staff members to ensure we continue to serve our community with excellence. We look forward to seeing them once again at the upcoming LAUSD Board Meeting during the public hearing for the Stella Elementary charter renewal! #BrightStarStrong
