Due to a nationwide IV fluid shortage caused by Hurricane Helene, Mass General Brigham regrettably must defer additional scheduled procedures. While we’ve received additional shipments, our current supply is still limited and our projected deliveries of fluids are still insufficient to meet the full demands for care across our system. Thanks to the extraordinary conservation and response efforts of our clinicians and staff, we remain confident in our ability to safely care for all patients who require our immediate care. We will continue to keep you updated as our response continues.

Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) is an international leader in virtually every area of medicine and has been the site of pioneering breakthroughs that have improved lives around the world. A major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, BWH has a legacy of excellence that continues to grow. With two outstanding hospitals, over 150 outpatient practices, and over 1,200 physicians, we serve patients from New England, throughout the United States, and from 120 countries around the world. The BWH name is a reflection of our history. In 1980 three of Boston’s oldest and most prestigious Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals - the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, and the Boston Hospital for Women – merged to form Brigham and Women’s Hospital. As a national leader in improving health care quality and safety, we have helped to develop some of the industry’s best practices including computerized physician order entry (CPOE) to prevent medication errors. The CPOE is now a nationally-accepted safety practice. The BWH Biomedical Research Institute (BRI) is one of the most powerful biomedical research institutes in the world and the second largest recipient of National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding among independent hospitals in the United States. BWH has long had great success in research as measured by the number of important discoveries made, the size and scope of its research portfolio and the volume of publications annually. BWH is a training ground for physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. We have 1,100 trainees in over 140 of the most sought after training programs in the world, and also host Harvard Medical School students in rotations throughout our programs. As our global health services expand, our clinical trainees have rich opportunities to contribute and learn in challenging environments around the world. Brigham and Women's Hospital is an EEO, AA, VEVRAA Employer.

This month, during #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, we’re proud to highlight Christina Minami, MD, MS, a surgeon in the Division of Breast Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Minami's journey into medicine was deeply influenced by her father, a now retired gastroenterologist in Hawaii. Although she was never pushed into medicine, observing the care he showed for his patients and the impact he had on their community sparked her interest. As a teenager, she started following in her father’s footsteps by volunteering at her local hospital, eventually coming to Brigham and Women’s as a college student volunteer while attending Harvard University. But it was her work as a research assistant at the Breast Center at the University of California in San Francisco that reassured her that she was on the right path. Having studied in Boston and Los Angeles, Dr. Minami completed her surgery residency in Chicago, and her fellowship training in New York City. She decided to return to Boston, looking for a position where she could focus on research as well as patient care. “The Brigham allowed me to pursue the clinical and research opportunities that I wanted. Plus, I already had the winter clothes,” she joked. Today, Dr. Minami enjoys the balance between patient care and research. “I find fulfillment in helping my patients through some of the most difficult moments in their lives,” she expressed. “On the other hand, the research component gives me a chance to use a different part of my brain, to think critically, and surprisingly, creatively,” Dr. Minami said. One specific research project that inspires Dr. Minami is advancing breast cancer treatment for older adults. As part of this project, she is developing tools to improve shared decision-making between oncologists and older patients with early-stage breast cancer, ensuring their care is personalized and well-informed. “Our ultimate goal is that treatment decisions are made that are not only educated and knowledgeable, but really consistent with what patients want.” Outside of the hospital, Dr. Minami finds time for her creative side, pursuing her passion for creative writing and enjoying the outdoors with her family.

As healthcare providers across the country continue to confront the national IV fluid shortage following the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene, Mass General Brigham has made the difficult decision to defer some non-emergent, elective procedures requiring certain IV fluids from Sunday, October 13, through at least Wednesday, October 16. While we strive to minimize any impact on patients, these measures will ensure we are able to care for those in immediate need. Due to the unpredictable nature of this situation, we do not know when our supply of IV fluids will improve but we are closely monitoring and will continuously evaluate to ensure we can return to normal operations as soon as possible. We are contacting affected patients and will work to reschedule them as soon as we are able.
