Great brief-writers are less likely than random brief-writers to start sentences with these four openers: "Importantly, . . . ." "Critically, . . . ." "Significantly, . . . ." "Crucially, . . . ." Why? Probably because they've internalized the show-not-tell principle: If you have to promise the reader that your point is critical or significant, it probably doesn't sound that way on its own! #legalwriting #persuasion

Asked how he drafted such pithy opinions, Justice Holmes responded that he forced himself to write while standing up so that he'd be motivated to get to the point! I don't recommend physical discomfort, but maybe he was on to something . . . . #legalwriting
