Congratulations, Jack, on this incredible opportunity to share BridgeUSA’s work on fostering constructive dialogue! Sharing insights on bridging divides and engaging in meaningful conversations is crucial as institutions like Monticello reflect on the evolving American identity. We’re proud to see you representing BridgeUSA in such an important space, and appreciate your dedication to strengthening civic discourse. Looking forward to seeing the continued impact of your work! ?? ??
With the United States approaching its 250th anniversary, cultural institutions are actively re-examining what it means to be American. As we approach this significant milestone, a growing number of institutions nationwide are recognizing dialogue as a crucial tool to foster community and address the affective polarization that has challenged our country for the past decade. Monticello and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation are a prime example, placing a stronger emphasis on facilitating dialogue across differences in their visitor experiences. Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence's author, holds a unique position in our history, embodying both enlightenment ideals of liberty and free speech, and also reflecting the early divisions among our founding fathers, notably his relationship with John Adams. Ultimately, dialogue prevailed, and early political divisions were mitigated through a shared sense of kinship and commitment to ideals of American Independence. This week, I had the privilege to present and participate in a panel with Monticello's tour guides and administrators, sharing BridgeUSA's experiences in leveraging constructive dialogue on college campuses and its relevance to historical institutions like Monticello. It was a truly fantastic group to collaborate with. My sincere thanks to Brandon Dillard for helping orchestrating this event, and to Becca Kearl from Living Room Conversations, a valued partner who brings a complementary perspective to this work. As an American history enthusiast, this was an incredibly enriching experience, and I look forward to returning to Charlottesville soon!
