Speaking—and understanding what the speaker is saying—are two separate and distinct processes in our brains. And yet, when a listener is tuned into a speaker their brain waves become completely synced. That’s why scientists who study communications say that communication is a “single act performed by two brains”, a cooperative venture. Conversely, if a person is speaking and the other person is not listening, there is no communications. And we’ve become experts at these one-way transmissions. As speakers, we argue our own points without pausing to see if we’ve captured the listener’s interest. As listeners, we tend to practice “predatory” listening, meaning we’re only listening for a pause in the conversation so we can interject. And as corporate communications practitioners, we continue to send out email after email, even as the analytics show us no one is reading them. The lack of real communication undermines our ability to develop common understanding and culture, minimizing opportunities for shared experiences and creating highly polarized and charged social environments—a reality reflected in the cultural divide of the 2024 presidential election. If our goal is to improve the way we communicate, then we have to acknowledge that the moment we open our mouths, we’re dependent on someone else to open their ears. And vice versa. SNL Snafu SNL's opening skit with one of the two presidential candidates appears to have violated the FCC's "Equal Opportunity" doctrine (see below), a ruling meant to ensure equal opportunity for all viable political candidates on the public's airwaves (yes, we the public own the spectrum). What's interesting is that producer Lorne Michaels said a month ago they wouldn't be hosting one candidate without the other as it would violate the doctrine--and then did it anyway. Meaning, equal opportunity might be going the way of the Fairness Doctrine, which required broadcasters to present fair and balanced coverage of critical issues. #FreeSpeech #FirstAmendment
