Last Wednesday night’s event, Digital Hostage: Navigating a Ransomware Attack, presented jointly by SIM Boston’s Providence Special Interest Group and RI Leaders in Technology, was truly a memorable one. It was exciting and rewarding to play a role, alongside Kathleen Malin, in supporting David Hemendinger, MBA's vision for this session. Dave not only wrote the script but also expertly led us through a realistic ransomware attack simulation that challenged the 65+ attendees to thoughtfully explore the intricacies of making critical decisions under pressure. A big thank you to David Marble, Cindy Lepore, and the team at OSHEAN, Inc. for hosting us in such a welcoming space. Their generosity in providing both the venue and their time truly contributed to the event’s success, highlighting the spirit of collaboration in our local IT community. As the first session in a two-part series on ransomware preparedness, the interactive simulation gave participants a firsthand look at the complexity and urgency of managing a cyber crisis, leaving us all with a deeper understanding of difficult decision-making under pressure. I’m excited for the second session on November 13, where an expert panel will review the decisions made during the simulation and provide valuable insights and best practices for incident response. A huge shout-out to the RI LIT, Providence SIG, and other local IT leaders who played key roles in the simulation and preparation for this event. Bringing attention to cybersecurity is crucial in today's digital landscape. In Rhode Island, a group of IT/Cyber Security subject matter experts will be conducting a live tabletop exercise simulating a cyber breach and ransomware coercion.
