"Why are so many small business owners selling their businesses to their workers? "Most small businesses never find an outside buyer. Without a worker-buyout, your customers lose their brand of choice and your community loses critical economic activity. The longest-serving and most loyal of your workers will be the least likely to find a comparable livelihood elsewhere. When a larger competitor does buy a business, they usually lay off most or all of the workers and dissolve the enterprise.?And your legacy disappears!" https://lnkd.in/gwvjmzk3 #successionplanning #employeeownership #sellabusiness #businessowners #legacy #retirement #nonextractivefinance #commerciallending #businessloans #economicdemocracy #solidarityeconomy #bredbaltimore #seedcommons

"The?Beneficial Ownership Information program, requires reporting on business owners and individuals who exercise significant control over a business. For businesses that are not cooperatives, this is a relatively straightforward reporting requirement for the owner(s) of the business. Because cooperatives have a broad-based ownership model, it is not clear currently who exactly within the business ownership needs to report. For worker cooperatives, this can be especially tricky to understand." - U.S. Federation of Worker Cooperatives #workercoop #cooperatives #corporatetransparencyact #usfwc

About last night ...Baltimore Green Justice Workers Cooperative (BGJWC) is honored to be one of the founding organizers of the Black Co-op Study Circle and is so thankful for the opportunity to work with genius minds like Amber Jones, Taji Amani, Ace Breaux, Ron Hantz, Eric Jackson and Dr. Jessica Gordon Nembhard. So, grateful to everyone who made it possible for the Black Co-op Study Circle (BCSC) to host Dr. Nembhard's author talk last night (11/10) in Cherry Hill! BGJWC has the word "cooperative" in our name to remind us that our long-term vision is to launch a green co-op. Since BGJWC's inception in December 2022, we have been on a journey to learn more about co-op formation and to interact with other people who have launched co-ops or have an interest in launching co-ops. We can never have enough discussions about "Collective Courage,"so mark your calendars 12/29 @ 4 p.m. at Diaspora Soul Jamaican and American Fusion Restaurant (21214) to discuss the preface - Chapter 1 of the 10th Anniversary Edition of "Collective Courage." This is Baltimore Rising! #CollectiveCourage #BCSC #BlackCoopnomics

Communities controlling their own economic destiny is the holy grail of sustainable and equitable development, but time and time again, resources are instead given to outside developers because "communities do not have the capacity" to do development themselves. This claim then becomes a self-perpetuating trap: communities never get the resources they need, so they never get to build a track record or develop their capacity. Capping off a decade of growth with a record-breaking combined allocation of $24M in 2022 and 2023 ($13M and $11M respectively), Seed Commons has shown the lie of this claim. Our networked non-extractive investing model has proved that when given the proper space and structure, communities can rapidly develop the capacity to drive their own economic development, resulting in far more equitable, lasting, and transformative benefit than traditional approaches. Seed Commons is that structure and space. Read our 2023 Impact Report now: https://lnkd.in/eGCV45px

You can be a part of building a resilient #WorkerCoop movement– one that lifts up local communities whether in moments of celebration or crisis. We've set a goal to raise $15,000 before the end of the year to grow this movement and replace business as usual with worker-owned and operated enterprises. Every worker co-op is a light on the path from extraction toward a future where we all thrive. Make a donation today at usworker.coop/give!
