Joe Morelle (D-NY) introduced a bill to provide for research and education with respect?to triple-negative breast cancer, co-sponsored by Reps. Don Bacon (R-NE) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). Morelle introduced a resolution expressing support for the designation of March?3, 2025, as “National Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Day”. The resolution highlights that triple-negative breast cancer disproportionately affects young women, Black and Hispanic women, and those with BRCA gene mutations ?? Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) introduced a bill to designate Regional Breast and Gynecologic Cancer Care Coordinators?to expand the work of the Breast and Gynecologic Oncology System of Excellence at the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the House VA Subcommittee on Health reviewed the bill on Tuesday as a part of the Women Veterans Cancer Care Coordination Act and Copay Fairness for Veterans Act. See why it is so important to do self breast exams each month, to know your breast density, to get access to the technology you need for radiologists to see tumors and provide early detection, and to use your voice to advocate for yourself and the care you need. Up to 50% of women have dense breasts. Mammograms alone miss tumors about 50% of the time. A coin toss is no way to determine if you live or die. That’s why supplemental screening that is essential for women with dense breasts for breast cancer early detection must be made available to all women with full insurance coverage. Ultrasound, MRI, CEM, MBI, new AI technologies and algorithms are all in the marketplace and enable early detection. They all should be covered by health insurance. This legislation is so important to saving lives! Breast cancer is 99% survivable when caught early! Yet for 40-50% of women, mammogram alone cannot detect the cancer early because they have dense breasts. Ultrasound, MRI, MBI, CEM, etc are essential screening technologies for early detection in this group of 40-50% of women. But this essential screening technology is usually not covered. However, states like Pennsylvania and South Carolina are making strides to change that. Thank you to all the advocates who educated and never gave up in those states and across the country. An attention-worthy national news story: ICYMI: Last night NBC Nightly News highlighted the importance of effective breast cancer screening - and the need for all of this screening to be covered by insurance. As the segment notes, while mammograms are the standard of care first screen for breast cancer, they are INEFFECTIVE for the many women who have dense breast tissue. And while more effective screening techniques exist including sonograms and MRIs, these are often DENIED as screening tools even for women whose mammograms are ineffective. We have the tools to effectively screen. Women are fighting to get access. Surely we can do better.
