  • Anhedonia, or the inability to experience pleasure, is a symptom we frequently see in patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression. However, there is hope for those battling this condition. Therapies like Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), one of the evidence-based treatments offered at Breakthru, have been shown to effectively address anhedonia in patients - independently of overall improvements in depression. Restoring the capacity for pleasure and enjoyment is a key focus of our comprehensive approach to helping patients regain their quality of life. https://lnkd.in/g9cmMkvq? #TMS #Anhedonia #TreatmentResistant #InterventionalPsychiatry #Depression #MentalHealthAwareness

ANHEDONIA IN MAJOR DEPRESSION: Can I be honest with you - not until recently did I fully appreciate the PROFOUND negative impact has on patients who had a high degree of Anhedonia. I express my previous shortcomings with sorrow - and a commitment to changing my respect for Anhedonia. Look at this poster that was presented at Psych Congress 2024 in Boston - please consider looking at the entire poster but please consider focusing on Figure 2. It shows how shockingly bad it is for patients to not just have a diagnosis of MDD (major depression), but to have MDD+Anhedonia. I’m now fully committed to the appropriate identification and treatment of all such patients. Once you examine the results of this poster I suspect you too will join me in confronting Anhedonia in our dear patients.

  • Unleashing Potential in Sports Psychiatry The field of sports psychiatry is evolving to address the unique mental health needs of athletes, as highlighted in a recent article from the American Psychiatric Association. Sports psychiatrists aim to treat primary symptoms while minimizing side effects, ensuring athletes receive expert care without compromising their performance. The article focuses on the distinct mental health issues athletes face, including common diagnoses like anxiety, depression, ADHD, sleep disorders and disordered eating. It emphasizes the integration of mental health services into the athletic environment, advocating for proactive strategies to mitigate stressors experienced by athletes. Key findings highlight sports psychiatry’s growing role in enhancing athletes' mental health and performance. Athletes often face barriers in seeking mental health treatment, such as stigma and the potential impact of psychiatric medications on performance. The report reveals how specialized care can assist athletes in overcoming psychological challenges while managing treatment side effects effectively. At Breakthru, we are dedicated to exploring and implementing tailored interventional techniques that support athletes in achieving their goals on and off the field. Our interventional techniques, such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), IV Ketamine and PRISM provide consistent and effective treatment while minimizing disruptions that can occur with standard treatments like oral medications. How Our Techniques Benefit Athletes: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS): Consistency in Care: TMS offers a non-invasive, consistent treatment option that can be administered regularly without frequent clinician changes. Enhanced Performance: By targeting specific brain areas, TMS can improve focus, reduce anxiety, and enhance overall mental well-being, crucial for peak athletic performance. IV Ketamine: Rapid Relief: Athletes often require quick and effective solutions to manage mental health issues. Ketamine therapy provides rapid relief from symptoms of depression and anxiety, helping athletes maintain their competitive edge. Sustained Improvement: Regular sessions can lead to sustained improvements in mental health, ensuring athletes remain resilient and mentally strong throughout their careers. PRISM: Targeted Treatment for Performance Anxiety: PRISM is a promising treatment for performance anxiety, a common issue among athletes. Using a computer simulation and EEG headset, PRISM helps athletes gain control over their anxiety responses. Enhanced Mental Control: This innovative technique trains individuals to manage stress and anxiety more effectively, leading to improved performance in high-pressure situations. • Our Newest Blog Post: An Update on Psychedelics (and Other Options While You Wait) If you’ve been waiting for the green light on psychedelics for mental health issues, you’ll have to wait a little longer. In August 2024, the FDA denied approval for MDMA (ecstasy), disappointing those hoping to see a quick change in treatment options for conditions like PTSD, including Dr. Karen Giles and our Atlanta-based team at Breakthru Psychiatric Solutions. However, while MDMA and psilocybin offer potential, there are other treatments available now that can make a difference. Here, Dr. Giles explains the recent FDA decision regarding MDMA, what it means for the future of psychedelics, and introduces Prism — a current FDA-approved treatment that can help while we wait for wider psychedelic legalization: https://lnkd.in/eVU6VgnX? #BreakthruPsych #Psychedelics #PTSD
