Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia launches talented students, beginning in middle school, on a path to college success and inspires outstanding college students to pursue careers in education. Breakthrough increases educational opportunity by focusing on the development of both students and teachers. Through academic enrichment and college preparation, Breakthrough prepares students who have limited educational opportunities to attend and succeed at competitive high schools and four-year colleges. Simultaneously, Breakthrough develops future educators by providing professional teaching experiences to college students through its selective residency programs. Breakthrough Philadelphia is part of a national educational movement called The Breakthrough Collaborative, which operates in cities across the country.

Third Year Honors History Student and February One Scholar at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University | Breakthrough Philadelphia Teaching Fellow
Last week I officially ended my nine-week internship with Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia and I cannot express enough how much this experience has allowed me to learn and grow. The rigorous training at the beginning of the program prepared me for teaching the students effectively. I had the opportunity to teach 8th grade math, which was completely out of my comfort zone, but became a fulfilling experience. I grew to appreciate and love math along with my students. From this, we were able to learn and teach each other. I am immensely grateful to have been a part of many students' educational journeys. Also during the summer, I was able to teach and create a non-academic elective to give students a safe space to explore their creativity and engage with their peers. At the end of the summer, students were able to showcase their talents and abilities in the elective showcase. Throughout my time with Breakthrough, I have learned firsthand what it takes to be an innovative teacher. The time I have spent with this internship has been invaluable. Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia has developed my skills as an educator in so many ways. I feel empowered and excited to continue my journey as an educator. This internship has been such a transformative experience, and I look forward to applying the skills and knowledge I have learned as I move forward in my career!
