INERATEC has secured up to €70 million in funding comittment from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst to scale up e-Fuel production and drive further research and development for sustainable fuels. This funding includes a grant by Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, underpinning the maturity of our technology. It will support the development of Europe’s first large-scale e-Fuel plant in Frankfurt, which will produce up to 2,500 tons of e-Fuels and e-Chemicals. Our e-Fuels, including e-SAF, will play a crucial role in climate-friendly aviation and ensuring compliance with EU ReFuelEU regulations.     Energy storage is one key to unlocking 24/7 clean power, and Energy Dome is leading the charge. With its CO? battery technology, Energy Dome has secured a landmark offtake agreement with ENGIE—one of the first for long-duration storage outside pumped hydro. This first-of-a-kind facility in Sardinia, Italy will deliver 10-hour energy storage to balance the grid and maximize renewables.     ?? Big News: Heirloom and the United Airlines Sustainable Flight Fund are joining forces to scale DAC as a critical tool to enable Net Zero aviation. ?? In addition to an equity investment in Heirloom – which builds on our recent $150M Series B round – the Fund also entered into an agreement for the right to purchase up to 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide removal (CDR), to be delivered for the production of sustainable aviation fuel or permanently stored underground. Why this matters: Aviation faces unique decarbonization challenges. The path to Net Zero requires both reducing emissions AND removing residual ones. While Direct Air Capture (DAC) is typically seen as just a removal solution, in aviation it's a powerful tool for both: 1?? When used to produce SAF, our DAC CO2 can help create fuel that's up to 94% less carbon intensive than conventional jet fuel. Importantly, this fuel can be developed with CO2 that is ALREADY in Earth’s atmosphere, rather than extracting new sources of carbon from deep underground. 2?? Since even the cleanest SAF will generate some CO2 emissions, our core CO2 removal capability remains crucial for achieving true Net Zero aviation. So how does this play out in the future? The answer is: we will need a lot more DAC to both generate cleaner fuels through SAF and remove those emissions that can’t be eliminated. Net Zero aviation requires a dual-pronged approach – and DAC can be a critical input to both sides.     ?? In the run-up to next week’s Clean Industrial Deal: A Reality Check on European Manufacturing?? Written with Julia Reinaud Europe faces a ‘scale or fail’ moment in the race for clean industrial leadership.?Weak demand signals, high energy costs, and fragmented markets threaten Europe’s industrial base and therefore its global competitiveness. Setting the right course with the forthcoming Clean Industrial Deal is of existential importance. ?? ?The reality: Europe is in crisis. Its established industrial base is eroding, while new sectors—particularly cleantech—struggle to scale. But there’s good news: Europe still has?potential if it ever manages to finally turn early-stage innovation – 27% of global cleantech patents from 2017-2021 originated here - into commercial success and global expansion. In the latest #Cleantech #Reality #Check series, we analyze Europe's industry competitiveness and 3 critical sectors: ?? Batteries: European battery manufacturing is standing at the abyss as fierce global competition erodes profit margins and weak demand signals stall progress. To scale from today’s ~200 GWh/year capacity to the ~400–550 GWh/year needed by 2030, Europe must focus on de-risking strategic investments, emphasizing "Net-Zero Acceleration Valleys" with integrated clusters, bolstering raw material resilience through domestic sourcing, and expanding recycling infrastructure. ?? Green Steel: The EU is #offtrack. Europe hosts over 50% of global low-carbon #steel projects, yet high hydrogen costs (€5–6/kg vs. €2–3/kg target) and policy uncertainty threaten progress. An effective EU ETS and CBAM could close the cost premium gap. With demand stimulation, action on steel scrap recycling, and preferential grid access, billions in private sector investment can be activated, putting the 15–20 Mt 2030 target back in sight. ? Electrolysers: The EU is at #risk of stalling without a significant surge in demand to capitalize on Europe’s technological edge and its 9 GW/y production capacity built in the first half of the decade. Without strong offtake agreements in lead markets, Europe’s nascent elecrolyser sector risks becoming collateral damage of our inability to get the much-hyped H2 economy off the ground. What needs to happen? 1?? Scale Demand: Implement #leadmarkets and stimulate demand to create viable markets for these crucial products, 2?? Close Cost Gaps: Bridge cost premiums with targeted support and de-risking instruments, affordable clean energy, streamlined permitting. 3?? Strengthen Supply Chains: Build domestic capacity for raw materials processing and recycling. It took 5 years to realize that the EU’s Green Deal was missing a business case. The #CID will need to fix this shortcoming, quickly. It’s a last chance to turn this ship called ‘European economy’ around. The stakes couldn’t be higher.?? ??https://lnkd.in/ecAWPQKY ??
