On June 21st, Sierra Leone's parliament passed a landmark bill to ban child marriage nationwide. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Bill 2024 criminalizes marrying or entering into a union with anyone under the age of 18, enforces penalties for offenders, and includes provisions for protecting victims’ rights and ensuring access to education and support services for young girls affected by early marriage. Sierra Leone faces significant challenges with child marriage, early pregnancy, and maternal mortality, with about one-third of girls married before the age of 18. Poverty forces many girls out of school and into marriage, as families seek to improve their financial situations or pay off debts. The new law aims to protect girls' childhoods and provide them with equal opportunities to pursue their goals.
