In sports, data is gold. But, many athletes either don’t have access or don’t know what to do with it. BreakAway Data is on a mission to change this. Founded by former NFL Wide Receiver David K Anderson, the app helps the best athletes in the world access, control, and use their data securely. They aggregate and track everything from what an athlete did in a game, to what they did in training, to their medical history, and all of their activity for all 24 hours of the day. From there, athletes can make adjustments, and considerations that increase performance, aid recovery, and create better results. In this interview with Dave Anderson, we talk about how they came up with the idea, how he utilized data during his NFL career, and the role AI will play in data in the future. https://lnkd.in/eiZHRV2j

Head of Performance at BreakAway Data | Director of Analytics & Skill Performance at Duke Sport Science | NFL Wide Receiver |
Beyond the Stopwatch: How BreakAway Data is Redefining the Standard of Athletic Measurement and Analysis This past weekend, I traveled to New Jersey for a USA Football flag tournament and talent identification camp at the New York Giants' practice facility. As a former NFL player, I could feel the nervous energy rippling through the facility, reminiscent of my own Combine experience. Speed and agility have always been defining standards in my career, and it was exciting to see a new generation pushing their limits. Breakaway's role was to facilitate the combine portion, utilizing our technology to capture key metrics on each athlete's performance. We split the 300 participants into male and female groups, each rotating through standardized drills: the 20-yard dash, 5-10-5 pro agility shuttle, and standing broad jump. Setting up our capture stations was challenging, requiring clear sightlines and ample space for the athletes to perform without obstruction. Technology was another hurdle. We rely on iPads and wireless connectivity to record and upload data in real-time, but getting a stable connection on the field was no easy feat. We used mobile hotspots, but upload speeds were inconsistent, especially between sessions when we had to quickly reposition everything. Throughout the day, we adapted on the fly. The grass fields became torn up from hundreds of cleats, and midway through, we relocated to prevent further damage. We broke down and reassembled in record time to keep the event moving. In the end, the camp was a resounding success. The talent level was exceptional, with many female athletes displaying skills on par with their male counterparts. Witnessing speed and agility translate from measurement to the field is always the ultimate goal, and many rose to the occasion. It was gratifying to see their pride as they completed each drill, knowing their results would become part of their permanent athletic record. I had the privilege of addressing both groups to explain the importance of the data we collected and encourage them to take ownership of their athletic development. Every sprint, jump, and agility drill matters in building their personal profile and pursuing their goals. Giving these young athletes a tool to unlock their competitive advantage and learn more about themselves is immensely rewarding. Events like these represent an exciting opportunity for Breakaway to expand its impact in the sports performance space. By partnering with organizations like USA Football, we can deliver a turnkey service that adds value for athletes, coaches, and scouts alike. With more reps and refinements, I believe we have the expertise to be a major player in combines and player evaluation. I left New Jersey inspired by the heart and hustle displayed by every athlete chasing their dream. They are the future of football, and I'm proud Breakaway could play a role in supporting their journey. It was truly a weekend to remember.

Athlete Management: An Everyone (Multi-Disciplinary), Everywhere (Multi-Organisation) Approach Martin BUCHHEIT wrote a great article on 'aligning and evaluating a Multi-Disciplinary Performance Department'. Defining, measuring and evaluating high quality, relevant work, guides the focus of a high performance team towards what matters. However, it made me consider if a single organisation approach to athlete management is appropriate? Modern athletes, more than ever before, move between multiple high performance environments (Club - National Team - Consultants - Private Performance Centres) over the course of their season/off-season. The ability for performance teams to communicate effectively (including sharing data) with one-another is crucial in supporting athletes across environments. However, sharing data between organisations has been notoriously difficult because of: 1) the legal safeguards around sharing athletes' data; 2) the practicalities of a busy performance team finding time for extra admin tasks. This has limited each organisation to their own, singular view of athlete performance. Not having the holistic, multi-environment perspective can lead to increased injury risk (especially in and around international windows/tournaments), missed performance development opportunities, and strained inter-organisational relationships. That's where an athlete-centred approach can unlock the seamless transfer of data. When an athlete controls and manages their performance data from every environment (like they do with BreakAway Data), they can share it with any of their stakeholders (automatically and in real-time). For example, every National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) player can access, control and share their performance data between club and national teams. Likewise, more The Premier League players than ever now use BreakAway to share their performance data with private practitioners (such as the quality team at 292 Performance). Supporting athletes to get their data can be so much more than players seeing what happened in matches (e.g. SkillCorner and StatsBomb) or training (STATSports, VALD Performance, etc). Once a team or organisation gets onboard, they're able to seamlessly share and receive crucial player data from every performance environment. As high-performance sport becomes increasingly complex, with more stakeholders then ever before, BreakAway Data want to help athletes, teams and Leagues navigate these challenges and successfully deliver on their commitment to excellence. ATP pushing the boundaries with Innovation and Technology Fantastic short read from the Sports Business Journal for sports fans and sports data/innovation specialists on how the ATP Tour implemented physical testing at the Next Gen Finals in Jeddah last year. It feeds really nicely into the wider strategy of improving the value and relevance of data for athletes and practitioners on the Tour, whilst continuing to engage and generate new fans with great data insights. BreakAway Data are delighted to support the ATP Tour as they continue to evolve the tennis high performance landscape, rolling out new support tools (investing into Tennis IQ), adapting rules (allowing wearables in matches) and creating new initiatives (BaseCamp). It's an exciting time in tennis and we hope to share insights from this fantastic journey. The holidays are here and I am hungry, so it’s time for some beefed up, end-of-year BreakAway Data statistics. Since our partnership with Statsbomb with the goal of bringing data to every NWSL athlete’s phone in August, the BreakAway App reports a?6400% increase?in the number of NWSL athletes with GPS (wearable) and detailed game stats in the palm of their hands. Don’t worry, we didn’t leave the men out–this is the sports industry after all. Men’s soccer players now have access to?136% more?stats on their apps since our partnership with Skillcorner. Along with soccer, American football was a big focus this year. BreakAway reports: ? 396?more?Biomechanics reports on some of the most elite high school and college football players in the United States in 2023 compared to 2022?(a?582% increase!) ? a?400% increase?in the amount of NFL starts by quarterbacks who have received a Biomechanics report from us in the past. (Shout out to Brock Purdy, C.J. Stroud, Aidan O’Connell, and Tommy DeVito!). ? a?100% increase?in the amount of Heisman trophies won by a quarterback who has done biomechanics with us in the past (congratulations Jayden Daniels!). BreakAway is international! The BA app was used in?101 more countries?in 2023 than in 2022. BreakAway is influential! People have posted about BreakAway on various social media platforms?over 184 times?since I started in March. One of the biggest successes of the year was the launch of BA Speed, where you receive top speed and other biomechanical metrics about your 10 yard sprint using only your iPhone. Since its inception in August 2023, BA Speed reports: ? a?40% decrease?in processing time (super fast!) ? 4?athletes topping 25 MPH!?Are you one of them? (Just kidding, you wouldn’t be on LinkedIn right now…) ? 16 uploads of Patrick Mahomes (a 1600% increase from last year!) Well, that’s enough beef until next year. Happy New Years 2024!!
