Bread & Roses Community Fund is accepting applications for our Climate Justice Organizing Fund through March 26! The Fund will provide $15,000 grants for community-led grassroots groups developing a climate justice organizing strategy or strengthening their capacity to engage in community organizing, and $25,000 grants for groups implementing an existing climate justice strategy using direct action community organizing. The Climate Justice Organizing Fund will support grassroots climate justice groups and community-based organizations in the Philadelphia region working to change the policies and practices that create and maintain climate injustice. The Fund will make grants of $15,000 and $25,000. Bread & Roses is thrilled to acknowledge the huge win for the community that is the 76ers’ decision to abandon their destructive plan to build a new arena in Chinatown, and to remain in South Philly. Not only is this a major victory for the city, but it is also a stark reminder of the power and impact of community organizing. Bread & Roses grantees Asian Americans United (AAU) and Students for the Preservation of Chinatown (SPOC), to name just a few organizations working in this fight, stood tall and rallied for two years against the owners of the 76ers in their plan to dramatically change the landscape of historic Chinatown in defiance of the wishes of the community. It is due to the tireless work of organizers such as these that we can celebrate this win as a city, and as a movement.

Bread & Roses Community Fund Seeks Climate Justice Fund Program Associate! Bread & Roses Community Fund, with support from The William Penn Foundation, is creating a three-year Climate Justice Fund. The Climate Justice Fund will move money to grassroots groups in the Philadelphia region (Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Camden counties), organizing to change the policies, practices, and processes that create and maintain climate injustices. Given how interconnected climate change is—and how little has been gained historically by isolating “environmental” issues in their own silo—the Climate Justice Fund will provide resources to groups using community organizing to advance climate justice in broad terms through changes in legislation, regulation, and institutional policies and practices. The Climate Justice Fund will also be a platform for building community among its grantees and creating opportunities for them to support and learn from each other. Bread & Roses will convene grantees to identify common barriers and challenges and to make recommendations to legislators and other policymakers, as well as local and national funders on how to continue, adapt, and expand support for climate justice.
