On Saturday, Oct. 26, BOUSD was proud to join our partners at the Brea Museum & Historical Society to celebrate 100 years of The Big Game. For those that don't know, The Big Game occurred when baseball legends Walter Johnson and Babe Ruth played an exhibition game in Brea in 1924. Saturday's Big Game Centennial Celebration included the National Anthem sung by Brea Olinda High School Choir and support from BOHS Baseball, Softball and Cheer programs. This month, during #SuicidePreventionAwarenessMonth schools across our district are highlighting the importance of mental health and suicide prevention with engaging activities that enhance students' understanding of this important topic. These are a few photos from last Thursday's lunch activities at Brea Olinda High School. ??Congratulations to our Counselors In Training (CIT) students who were recognized during the Child Development Services Showcase at last night's Board of Education Meeting. ?? CIT students volunteer their time during the school year with our Child Development Services Department to work alongside staff and learn the basics of care for school-age children. They volunteer their time at CDS after-school-programs which helps them explore career opportunities in early childhood education and child development studies, and helps them build strong connections with BOUSD's youngest learners. #wearebousd

The best part of Career-Connected Schools is working with students and teachers and watching the lightbulbs go off as they dialogue together to learn a common language of career and connect it to what they are already doing in the classroom. Laurel Elementary, a school of innovation and career exploration, is integrating the Career-Connected Schools model to unify and expand the great work already happening. As one sixth-grade teacher noted, this model is activating career curiosity and fostering positive self-awareness in students: 'I'm excited to see these kids excited about something... As a teacher, it’s also exciting to think about how I can bring this across the curriculum.' During tonight's Board of Education meeting, the Board welcomed Brea Olinda High School senior Lauren Ko as the new Student Board Member. Lauren was originally announced in May but was officially sworn in during tonight's meeting. Lauren Ko is an enthusiastic and dynamic leader who, on campus, serves as the captain of the Mock Trial team, editor-in-chief of the Wildcat Newspaper, producer of the annual TEDxBrea event, co-president of the BOHS Red Cross Chapter, president of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Society, senior class treasurer, and member of the National Honor Society. On Aug. 20, Brea Olinda Unified School District celebrated the groundbreaking of a school site fencing project that is set to begin at multiple schools in the district starting in September. The event took place at Laurel Elementary Magnet School and marked a significant milestone in the District’s ongoing commitment to enhance safety measures at all BOUSD schools and ensure that students can learn in a secure and safe environment. “The enhancement of perimeter fencing at our school sites is a critical component of this effort, serving as a first line of defense to control access to our campuses and guide visitors through a single point of entry into our main offices,” said Superintendent Brinda Leon. “We value our school board for supporting this initiative and approving this expenditure which is paid for utilizing our district facilities funds.” The estimated $3 million project will include fencing upgrades for all nine of the district's school sites.
