Love and hate to the algorithm is the same. It will show you whatever you feed it. The stronger the emotion, the more powerful the response will be. If someone really hates me, they might re-post it and write why in long paragraphs. People will write comments, create videos, and come to my house with tiki torches. People will have trouble remembering your name, what you told them, and how much money they owe you. Tech Stacks and the Science of Buttons A long time ago in a place far far away, (Reston, Virginia in the ninties) I worked in tech support for a DSL company called COVAD. DSL is high speed internet over phone lines and the router was needed to connect to our network. I was walking this guy through the complicated and boring process of re configuring his router when he asked me out of frustration, "Why isn't their a big button to do this?" He even described how it should be gold with the words "Fix Internet" on it. I tried to explain that how the button looked wasn't so important as the fact that the system had no where to put it. He didn't accept this answer and insisted there should be a button for these sort things the whole time I helped him. The copper network that ran house phones, dial-up, and DSL is quietly rotting in side yards and underground pipes across America. The technology changes but people do not. I still think about what the button the guy wanted. I'm starting to agree with him. We could have made it easier. We could have just mailed everyone pre-configured routers. Tech stacks are one way to create a button. A tech stack is a collection of technologies that all work together in an automated way. It's likely that you interact with tech stacks every day and every time you push a button. When I press post right now there will be a tech stack processing the data made up of different programming languages. All I see is "Post" written in white on a blue oval, but there are a lot of different technologies working behind the scene to make things happen. Digital Marketers like to talk about funnels. They are useful visual metaphors to describe how it fits with your overall sales process. A funnel is a representation of the statistics that go into generating sales leads. The top of the funnel are always the people being exposes to your message. The bottom are people will to act on that message. There are always more people being exposed to your message than will act on it. You funnel as many qualified people into your digital marketing that you can and hope to catch some on the other side. Funnels also look great on slideshows. You can easily place a service and a metric at each stage of the funnel. It really more of a sorting process. There is nothing more powerful than community. It can send us to the moon, split the atom, and create hip hop line dancing. It is the engine that drives countries, cults, and wars. It is the oxygen required for democracy to happen. The internet and I grew up together. My dad loved technology and brought home computers like the TRS-80, where I could play Frogger if I learned how to use it. I kept having to learn new systems if I wanted to keep playing. Eventually, I had to learn how to cable and setup LANs and then connect to the internet. Now I get mad if it takes fifteen minutes to load Fortnight. It's easy to get lost in packets, routers, and switches and think you know how it all works, but the need we all have to be part of a community is why the internet exists as it does. Digital Marketing is a method of building community around a product or business. A past friend once described how to build a community like this. "I build my friends list in a deliberate way. I do the whole thing like a dinner party with a guest list and a seating chart. I provide the party, and I know everyone well enough to sit each person next the right one. Now it's more than a party, it's a group that is engaging. " It worked and her blog formed a community. What do you think?
