A roundtable on the growing scale and persistence of Crimes Against Women and Girls (#CAWG) in India on 28 February 2025 at IIC New Delhi saw stellar participation and incisive insights on urgent action to address this malaise. The discussion was informed by an analysis of 70 years of recorded crime against women and girls in India in the report, How She Figures:? Crime against women and girls in India Interrogating NCRB data 1953–2022. A huge thank you to Anjali Rai, annie namala, Brave Souls Foundation, Deepthi Sukumar, Garima Jain, Kabithui Rongmei, Mamata Dash, Manak Matiyani, #Muralidharan from National Platform For The Rights of the Disabled, Nayanika Singhal, Raj Kapil, Sanjana Srikumar, Seema Baquer, #Vanshika, Researcher from Part III who shared their insights and expertise. We are also grateful for Maja Daruwala's invaluable guidance and support. Your contributions are vital to driving meaningful change. Building Legal and Community Networks: Establishing a National Network of Lawyers and partnering with National Law Schools to conduct awareness workshops, enhancing representation for marginalised communities. ??? Shaping Public Narratives: Presenting our research at prominent conferences and collaborating with journalists to challenge misinformation and amplify data-driven stories on violence against women. ?? Strategic Policy Advocacy: Engaging with commissions and petitioning courts to ensure the effective implementation of laws protecting marginalised groups. These are just a few of the actionable recommendations that emerged from our deliberations. We are eager to expand this work and welcome further collaboration. After enduring years of pain and struggle, Isha & Bhumi finally see justice! The Delhi court has sentenced their attacker to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and awarded ?20 lakh in compensation to support their recovery and rebuild their shattered lives. But the fight doesn’t end here. Recognising the long-term impact of the attack, the court has also directed the Delhi Government to provide employment to Isha, who is now a graduate. This crucial step ensures she can regain independence and move forward despite the immense hardships she has faced. This judgment is not just about punishment—it’s about acknowledging the pain survivors endure, offering them support, and giving them hope for a better future. It stands as a beacon of strength for all acid attack survivors, proving that justice can prevail and that no survivor is alone in this fight. "This verdict brings hope, not just to Isha & Bhumi, but to every survivor fighting for justice." – Shaheen Malik, Brave Souls Foundation Brave Souls Foundation would like to congratulate Advocate Haider Ali for representing this case and managing to receive a fair compensation for the survivors. #Surgery_Update In 1994, Jhosna Basu’s life was shattered by an unimaginable tragedy. A financial dispute between her husband and his friend led to a horrific acid attack—intended for her husband but mistakenly falling on Jhosna instead. In an instant, her world changed forever. She suffered severe burns on her face, head, and neck, and tragically lost one of her eyes permanently. For years, she sought treatment at government hospitals, but financial struggles kept her from accessing specialized eye surgeries—a crucial step in her long road to recovery. Despite the hardships, Jhosna never gave up hope. When she learned about Brave Souls Foundation, she reached out to our Kolkata unit, determined to continue her healing journey. With our support, Jhosna recently underwent her first successful eye surgery at Sushrut Hospital, Salt Lake, Kolkata. The results have been remarkable, bringing her one step closer to the treatment she had been waiting for all these years. But her journey is far from over—more surgeries are needed, and we are committed to standing by her every step of the way. In 2013, Rajneeta, a minor, was unintentionally caught in an acid attack, suffering 100% disability. Her journey has been marked by 23 surgeries, financial hardship, and social struggles, yet her fight for rightful support continued for over a decade. However, after the intervention of Brave Souls Foundation, the Allahabad High Court condemned government inaction, ordering district authorities to prevent delays in aid for acid attack survivors. This ruling is a step forward, but why must survivors go to court for basic support? For #Pampa, her friends have been her pillar. Their unwavering presence has shown her that friendship, when built on genuine care and understanding, can be stronger than blood ties. When the world seemed heavy, her friends didn’t just offer comfort, they became her family, reminding her that love comes in many forms, and the right friends can make all the difference. Sometimes, the love that lifts you up isn’t from family, it’s from friends who choose to stand by you when it matters most. For #Rinku, healing came in the form of a new beginning, her daughter. In her, she found strength, purpose, and the courage to rewrite her story. Her love isn’t just protection, it’s a promise to nurture, to grow, and to ensure that the future is brighter than the past. This Valentine’s month, we celebrate the love that rebuilds, redefines, and renews. #Victim_to_Victory On February 14, 2025, Ruman, an acid attack survivor, won a hard-fought legal battle after six years of perseverance. Her husband and in-laws, who forced her to drink acid in 2019, have now been found guilty under IPC Sections 326A/323/34. This victory was not easy. Ruman endured severe internal burns, prolonged medical struggles, and systemic neglect, yet she refused to give up. She fought through countless surgeries, legal roadblocks, and financial distress—all while raising her young son alone. Brave Souls Foundation, under the leadership of Shaheen Malik, has been by her side since 2019, providing legal aid and ensuring justice prevailed. Special thanks to Adv. Haider Ali, who represented Ruman in this trial. But Ruman’s battle is far from over. She continues to face lifelong health issues and financial hardships. This case highlights the need for stronger survivor support, proper medical aid, and speedier justice for victims of gender-based violence. #support #survivors #acid_attacks #justice #celebration Shaheen Malik Ali Zia Kabir Choudhary Mansi Rathee Haider Ali Sija Nair Pal Amir Bin Rafi Kaisar Ali Zenaira Bakhsh Kamran Yousuf Vikar Syed
