A national grassroots movement to unite red and blue Americans in a working alliance to depolarize America.

关于我们

Braver Angels is a national citizens' movement to reduce political polarization in the United States by bringing liberals and conservatives together to understand each other beyond stereotypes, forming red/blue community alliances, teaching practical skills for communicating across political differences, and making a strong public argument for depolarization. We've designed several workshops that successfully help red and blue Americans rebuild trust and better understand each others' perspectives. Our signature "Red/Blue Workshop" brings together 7 conservative-leaning participants and 7 progressive-leaning participants for moderated activities and discussions that clarify disagreements, reduce stereotyped thinking, and begin building the relationships needed to find common ground. Our "Skills Workshop" teaches practical skills for having better conversations with friends and family members with whom you have strong political disagreements. To further the work of depolarization nationwide, we're building a grassroots movement of local "red-blue alliances" that work together to continue the trust-building and mutual understanding begun in the workshops, reach out to others in the community with the Braver Angels message, and look for ways to work together on issues connected to polarization. Each year, we bring together local red and blue leaders from across the country to democratically determine our national priorities for the coming year – and build a national alliance that can influence the direction of our nation. We're also bringing together Americans from across the political spectrum to model the “Braver Angels Way” of public debate: constructively engaging with opposing points of view. Braver Angels is not affiliated with THE BETTER ANGELS SOCIETY, the non-profit organization that supports the production, promotion and educational outreach associated with historically significant documentary films made by Ken Burns and other associated filmmakers.

The events of July 13 have shocked the nation. We are grateful to the many partner organizations and allies of the College Debates and Discourse Alliance that quickly released statements condemning the attempt on former President Trump's life and political violence in general. This heinous act, and its aftermath of divisive rhetoric on?social media, reveals the dire state of our national discourse right now, and we must work together to change it. We are living through a historic moment and have a choice to make. We can either unite on a much-needed course correction that restores civil discourse and civic charity, or we can stay our current course and grow even more entrenched and divided. We are encouraged by those who have spoken out against toxic polarization and are working to combat it, and we stand ready to work with anyone and everyone to build bridges of understanding and restore healthy political discourse, especially in collaboration with the rising generation and future leaders of our country.? Yesterday was a devastating day for our nation. It’s on each of us to stop this dangerous cycle of mutual destruction. No matter where we land on the political spectrum, here’s what we must do as we head into the upcoming election: 1. The immediate priority is to not escalate an already precarious situation. Do not throw fuel on the fire through attacks and counterattacks over responsibility for the assassination attempt. We’ve gotten ourselves into a deep hole. The first thing we must do is stop digging. 2. Second, we have to tone down the apocalyptic rhetoric that our democracy will not survive four years of President Trump or President Biden. When the survival of the American experiment is at stake, violence can seem justified and even heroic. We have to believe in ourselves that we can hold onto our democratic republic no matter who wins or loses an election. 3. Third, we must use this time to soul-search what we’ve allowed to happen in our political culture, from the national to the local level, and in our families and friendships. Polarization is a “We the People” problem and not just a “those politicians” problem. We have a role to play. For years, we've unleashed bitter contempt on our fellow Americans who think and vote differently and, as a result, have created a toxic cycle to which both sides contribute. Together, we can change the trajectory of this polarization. Now is the time. Our country depends on it.
