This week, we’re joining the national conversation to spread awareness about the realities of drug and alcohol use for National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week. #NDAFW At BCCS, we’re committed to educating our community, empowering individuals to make informed decisions, and supporting those who are in the midst of their recovery journey. By sharing research-based facts, we aim to prevent substance abuse and reduce stigma around addiction because early education and support can help reduce the chances of substance abuse. Recovery is possible — and it starts with knowledge.

Our CEO, Dr. Lynn Morrison, was involved in a groundbreaking study on how interpersonal relationships impact the recovery trajectory of people with OUD. Great read! ??
Substance Abuse Treatment Leader | Community Health Advocate | Member, Delaware Behavioral & Mental Health Commission
I was pleased to be part of this groundbreaking study with the University of Delaware, which examined the impact of interpersonal relationships on recovery trajectories for individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD). Many people transitioning into recovery must navigate the challenge of rebuilding relationships lost prior to treatment. However, disclosure can be risky — will loved ones offer support and encouragement, or will they judge? Some disclosures led to stigma and mistreatment, which is linked to treatment dropout and continued substance use. The study found that disclosure is a crucial step in the social rebuilding process — sharing one’s remission, history, and treatment journey can significantly aid in recovery. Study Overview: ?? Reason for Study: Support individuals in recovery by reducing stigma when sharing their journey with loved ones, with a focus on treatment retention. ?? Study Outcome: A structured intervention was provided to clients considering disclosure. This intervention helped individuals decide whether to share and prepared them for potential outcomes. Results showed that those who participated in the intervention received more positive responses from loved ones than those who disclosed without support. ? Next Steps: Expand the study on a larger scale to further examine factors contributing to stigma, such as relationship closeness and its impact on treatment retention.

Did you know that factors like housing, education, and employment play a significant role in substance abuse and recovery? These are known as social determinants of health — the conditions in which we live, work, and grow. For example, growing up in a neighborhood with high crime and violence can negatively impact mental health, create bad influences, limit opportunities and increase feelings of hopelessness & depression — factors that often contribute to substance abuse. When we address these social determinants, we can create a stronger foundation for lasting recovery. #SocialDeterminantsOfHealth

When Bertram Hickman joined the BCCS staff last year, he had just become a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and was looking for a stable place to stretch professionally and expand his experience in the field. A colleague recommended BCCS as a stable place. He also found a place where he could make a difference every day. “I knew I was making a difference by how the people we serve truly love our services and the fact they felt welcomed,” he said. #Careers #MakeADifference https://ow.ly/bPkp50Us5JT
