Today we celebrate the famous contributions of Maggie Lena Walker, the first woman to establish a bank in the United States. The St. Luke Penny Savings Bank (founded in 1903) was a pillar of the Richmond, Virginia community and provided financial services to black communities in the South. Amongst the tumultuous time that was the Great Depression, one of the ways the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank survived was through mergers with two smaller black-owned banks, later becoming what we know today as the Consolidated Bank & Trust. To honor Black History Month, we show appreciation to Maggie L. Walker for her knowledge, resilience, and strength.
