I've been thinking a lot about why remote work works so well for Brainscape.?It's not (just) because?we get to hire the best people regardless of location, or that we all get to avoid the time and stress of rush hour commutes. It's because Brainscape team members' work tends to require a larger amount of "deep work" proportional to the work of many other companies. Over the years, Brainscapers have earned increasing amounts of *autonomy* to work for long periods of time on complex projects that require increasingly intense critical thinking -- whether that thinking involves software development, research, analytics, educational content creation, marketing automation, or just crushing through a huge backlog of partnership emails or phone calls. Forcing every Brainscape employee to be in an office (especially an "open office") for 3+ days a week would otherwise make us all LESS productive in those focused endeavors.?As we all know, a "quick" impromptu 2-minute conversation by your desk neighbor can cost 2 *hours* of lost productivity when it takes a long time to get back "in the zone". "But what about company culture and something something water cooler?!" We honestly don't feel like we're missing out on much.?Even with our remote-first, largely asynchronous, deep-work-based mindset, we?still DO have tons of collaborative Google Meets, game-filled virtual happy hours, and strategic team offsites in person. It just means that we've gotten really good at "batching" our live human interaction, while managing our own Slack status settings to limit the disruptiveness of any interruptions (unless they are important to keeping the trains moving on time). As?Jared Kleinert at?Offsite often says, the companies?best able to make remote work successful are the ones that have developed the largest amount of *trust* among team members. And after over a decade of building this company, I'm happy to say Brainscape has never had a greater sense of trust, a more cohesive culture, a more efficient work ethic, or a clearer shared vision of what we're building toward.
