From a deep dive into global energy innovation, a classic Houston stop at?my family's favorite breakfast hangout, Kenny & Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen’s, then geeking out over a painting of Richard Feynman in my office, and finally giving her a sneak peek at our?next generation plasma reactors in the Woodside-Rice Decarbonization Accelerator (WRDA) which we’ll be?scaling up inside of Greentown Labs later this year! We announced WRDA early last year as a Rice Nexus collaboration with Woodside Energy and Rice REINVENTS in the Rice University School of Engineering and Computing directed by Aditya Mohite aimed at using first principles physics to engineer economically scalable solutions that convert greenhouse gas into new critical materials to manufacture the world's best transistors and batteries! Deforestation is a consequence of human need—driven by agricultural expansion, infrastructure development, and economic pressures that arise when systems fail to support the most vulnerable. As populations grow, so does the demand for food and land, often at the expense of forests. Political and funding uncertainties have led many conservation operators to reconsider carbon markets as a sustainable financing alternative. But for these markets to be effective, they must offer financial incentives that are competitive with those driving deforestation. To make conservation and reforestation economically viable, market-based mechanisms must complement regulatory efforts. As the carbon market evolves, stronger safeguards and science-backed methodologies are necessary to ensure transparency and real impact- our main goal at Earthshot. Tackling deforestation requires a dual approach: enforcing regulations while creating financial incentives for sustainable land use. Without both, progress will remain limited. The urgency of halting deforestation and biodiversity loss demands solutions that balance economic, environmental, and social priorities.

Absolute joy to host our friend Noel Bakhtian from the Bezos Earth Fund at Greentown Labs, following her fantastic keynote at the MIT Energy Conference Engaging with visionaries like Noel is a powerful reminder of what makes our work so important—turning big ideas into tangible impact. At Greentown Labs, our community of entrepreneurs is tackling some of the toughest climate and energy challenges—transforming breakthrough research into real-world solutions. They are the ones driving first-of-a-kind pilots, commercializing tough tech, and scaling innovations that will shape the future of our planet. And as a community, we must keep asking ourselves: How can we help them move faster, stronger, and better? Noel’s insights on accelerating climate innovation deeply resonated.
