Shrinking attention spans are a growing challenge, especially when it comes to preparing for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT. As highlighted by?Nic Querolo at Bloomberg, major cities like NYC and LA are experimenting with phone bans in schools to tackle distractions. But is it enough? Elizabeth Heubeck at Education Week reports that a majority of educators are sounding the alarm on the negative effects of cellphones and social media on students’ mental health and learning. A growing number of teachers support school-wide policies to limit or ban these devices during instructional time, seeing them as necessary for creating a more focused and safe learning environment. While concerns around distractions are valid, it's also essential to recognize that not all technology use is detrimental. Innovative approaches, like game-based learning, can turn potential distractions into powerful tools for engagement and deeper learning. By leveraging the right kind of technology, we can help students stay focused and make learning more effective and enjoyable. ????
