???? Winnipeg takes a big step toward reducing food waste! ???? Starting Oct. 15, 2024, the City of Winnipeg in Canada is launching 15 food waste drop-off stations in partnership with Compost Winnipeg. This initiative is designed to help residents divert food waste from landfills and combat climate change. Why is this important? According to Mayor Scott Gillingham, for every ton of food waste Winnipeg diverts, they can eliminate approximately two tons of CO2 emissions. He also emphasizes the convenience of these stations, allowing residents to make a meaningful impact while preparing for the upcoming green cart program. Here's how it works ?? collect food scraps in any container (use newspaper, paper bags, or BPI-certified compostable bags for easy transport), store your food waste in the fridge or freezer until you're ready to drop it off, then toss your bag or empty container into the designated carts at the drop-off stations. The stations will be located across the city, including all three 4R Winnipeg Depots, and will be available until the curbside food waste collection program starts, expected in 2030. Ready to start #composting? It’s simpler than you think! Composting transforms food scraps into a nutrient-rich soil amendment, benefiting your garden and the planet. Here’s how to get started: ??Choose Your Method: Have a yard? Try a DIY pile, bury scraps, or use a compost bin. No space? Look for community drop-off options. ??Gather Your Materials: Balance “greens” (food scraps) and “browns” (dry leaves, cardboard) for a thriving compost. ??Maintain Your Pile: Turn it regularly to speed up decomposition. If it smells, add more browns. ??Be Patient: Finished compost can take anywhere from a few months to a year, depending on your method. ??Avoid Mistakes: Don’t add meat, dairy, pet waste, or plastic that is not certified to be home compostable. ???
