BPCL reinforced its commitment to sustainability with the inauguration of a 3.2MW AC Floating Solar Plant at Kochi Refinery, led by Ms. Sarada Muraleedharan IAS, Chief Secretary, Govt. of Kerala. Installed across 8 acres of the refinery’s rainwater harvesting ponds, the solar plant enhances green energy adoption, reducing annual carbon emissions by 5,672 MTCO2e while ensuring cost-effective power generation. During the visit, the Chief Secretary received an overview of Kochi Refinery’s renewable energy initiatives, witnessed a Bronto Skylift safety demonstration, interacted with young engineers, and toured BPCL’s upcoming Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plant, which will convert municipal waste into bioenergy and organic fertilizers. The event was attended by District Collector Mr. NSK Umesh IAS, Dr. V Venu IAS, Ms. R Sreelakshmi IAS, and BPCL’s senior leadership team. Chief Secretary, GOK inaugurates BPCL’s Floating Solar Plant at Kochi Refinery Champion of green and clean Kerala, Ms. Sarada Muraleedharan IAS, Chief Secretary, Govt of Kerala inaugurates the BPCL Floating solar plant at Kochi Refinery. The 3.2MW AC floating solar plant has been installed in the rainwater harvesting (RWH) ponds of Kochi Refinery which is surrounded by lush green mango orchards. The solar panels spread across 8 acres of the available water bank of 19 acres at the Refinery RWH ponds. With this facility, the annual carbon dioxide reduction is roughly 5,672 MTCO2e. The Capacity Utilization Factor (CUF) of the plant is 24.43% and the cost of power generation is Rs.3.51/kWh. In addition to the roof-mounted and ground-mounted solar power projects, this floating solar power plant is another step towards enhancing the green energy capabilities at Kochi Refinery. Present on the auspicious occasion were District Collector Mr. NSK Umesh IAS, Ms. R Sreelakshmi IAS, Staff Officer to the CS and Former Chief Secretary Dr. V Venu IAS along with BPCL Director (Refineries), Mr Sanjay Khanna, Executive Director (Kochi Refinery) Mr. Sankar M, Chief General Managers Mr. George Thomas (HR), Mr. Rajeev C (Operations), Mr. Senthilkumar GR (Technology), Mr. KP Satheesh Kumar (Projects) and Mr. Venugopal T (Engineering & Construction); and the CS office team members Ms. Indu Isaac, Project Engineer, KSWMP and Ms. Ann Maria Anil, Senior RGSA Training Coordinator. Earlier the Chief Secretary was given a warm welcome by Director (Refineries), Mr. Sanjay Khanna. After a brief presentation on Kochi Refinery and the main renewable energy initiatives at KR, the Chief Secretary was given a bird’s eye view of the Refinery atop the Bronto Skylift at the Main Fire Station of Kochi Refinery. She was joined by Dr. Venu IAS, Mr Umesh IAS and Ms. R Sreelakshmi IAS on this breathtaking demonstration of the safety preparedness at Kochi Refinery. The Chief Secretary also interacted with the young lady panel engineers at the Main Control room. Addressing the BPCL team, Ms. Sarada IAS, expressed that, “The Government has seen BPCL as a valuable partner in the development of the State, but also lately in waste management. Thanks to the BPCL team and family for the detailed insights into the working of the Refinery, the quality paradigm, and the amazing sustainability initiatives in renewable energy. It has been very encouraging to see the enthusiasm and the commitment.” The Chief Secretary Ms. Sarada Muraleedharan IAS and the Ernakulam District Collector, Mr. NSK Umesh IAS, are visiting Kochi Refinery for the first time. It was indeed an honour for BPCL to host the administrative heads of the State and the District at the largest PSU Refinery in India on 21 March 2025.

BPCL Joins Hands with BluJ Aerospace, ANERT & CIAL to Pioneer Hydrogen-Powered Aviation BPCL has signed a landmark MoU with M/s. BluJ Aerospace, ANERT (Govt. of Kerala), and CIAL to develop the world’s first green hydrogen-fuelled VTOL aircraft ecosystem. This collaboration marks a major step toward India’s Net Zero 2070 vision, making aviation faster, quieter, and more sustainable. BPCL will enable hydrogen refuelling through its upcoming Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS) in Kochi and Trivandrum and partner with BluJ Aerospace on R&D for high-power-density PEM hydrogen fuel cells. The MoU was signed by Shri RANJAN NAIR, Business Head – Renewable Energy, BPCL, in the presence of key officials from the government, BPCL, ANERT, BluJ Aerospace, and CIAL.
