Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia would like to congratulate Anna Drew for being awarded the Milken Educator Award, basically the Oscars for teaching—a feat she highly deserves. The first photo, taken during our summer camp in 2018, showcases a remarkable moment when Mrs. Drew caught a bat in the gym. Instead of simply removing it, she turned the experience into a fascinating teaching opportunity. She gathered the kids and led an impromptu lesson on the life of bats, explaining their habits, importance to the ecosystem, and unique adaptations. Her ability to transform an unexpected situation into an engaging educational experience perfectly reflects her enthusiasm for science and learning. The second picture features Mrs. Drew working alongside a Club member on a hands-on science experiment—extracting DNA from a strawberry. Through this interactive activity, she helped spark curiosity about genetics and the building blocks of life, making complex scientific concepts accessible and exciting for young learners. Both moments highlight Mrs. Drew’s dedication to making learning an adventure, fostering a love for science, and creating unforgettable experiences for the kids at our Club. Mrs. Drew has worked with us since 2017 as a Tutor and Curriculum Coordinator. Her reaction reflects all of us.
