From its beginnings in 1860, Boys & Girls Clubs of America has been shaped by visionary women; Elizabeth Hammersley, Louisa Bushnell, and sisters Mary and Alice Goodwin saw the need for a safe, supportive space for young people. Their mission sparked a movement that continues to empower kids nationwide. Here in Wooster, we proudly carry on their legacy by providing a place where local youth can learn, grow, and thrive. Every day, our team works to empower the next generation—ensuring that every child, no matter their circumstances, has the opportunity to reach their full potential. ?? As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we recognize the incredible women—past and present—who have shaped our Club and continue to make a difference in the lives of our members. #WomensHistoryMonth #BGCW #GreatFuturesStartHere #EmpowerTheNextGeneration #Wooster
Throughout history, many remarkable women have helped shaped Boys & Girls Clubs of America. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we especially recognize and honor the organization’s four visionary founders: Elizabeth Hammersley, Louisa Bushnell, and sisters Mary and Alice Goodwin.? ? In 1860, these pioneering women established the first Club in Hartford, Connecticut, to provide safety, support, and character development for underserved boys. Their model quickly proved successful, inspiring the creation of additional Clubs in other communities. In 1906, these Clubs united under the Boys Club Federation of America, igniting a nationwide movement. In 1990, the organization was officially renamed Boys & Girls Clubs of America to acknowledge and celebrate the inclusion of girls.? ? Today, the enduring legacy of Elizabeth, Louisa, Mary, and Alice continues as dedicated national and Club staff and volunteers across the country work tirelessly to empower and uplift the next generation.?? ? #WHM #BGCA??
