Steven says he had a complicated childhood and a particularly difficult relationship with his mother. Decades later, he still felt trapped by anger. After a series of challenges, he found himself running out of money with nowhere to go. Then Steven found refuge at The Bowery Mission in his hour of need. With renewed faith, he’s now employed as a homeless shelter residential aide and helping others. He’s deeply grateful for the kindness he’s received — thanks to friends like you! After a job injury left Justin unable to work, he lost his housing. Searching for a homeless shelter, The Bowery Mission stood out — especially our emphasis on faith and prayer. While here, he continued pursuing his education and recently enlisted in the Navy. "I might have been homeless for a bit, but it helped build my faith. And the Mission has helped me pursue my goals and dreams. They've been so encouraging. I feel the Lord’s blessing every day." Compassion and God's grace can transform lives. "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it" (John 1:5). ? There's something amazing about light. No matter how dark and bleak a place may be... it only takes?a single ray of light to bring illumination and hope. ? At The Bowery Mission, we’ve seen it firsthand. In times of crisis—9/11, Hurricane Sandy, COVID shutdowns, and every ordinary hard day in between—the Mission has been a lamp on a lampstand, shining light into the darkest moments. ? Yesterday we held our biggest annual fundraising event, and we are so thankful to God, to our honoree George Oliphant, and to each of our staff, volunteers, and supporters for helping to continue to shine light and hope for those who find their way to us in their darkest moments. ?
