Here at The Bowery Mission with both Pauline Bethel, who with great compassion has faithfully volunteered here over the past 10 years. Pauline is seen here enjoying a song composed just for her by American musician and song-writer, Ken Medema. Ken routinely travels from California to NYC to bless our guests with his wonderful musical talents. Both of these exceptional volunteers have an amazing heart for ministering to the homeless community.

This Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, we encourage you to remember and support our neighbors in need. Homelessness continues to surge, with more than 130,000 people sleeping in public shelters each night in our city. And an estimated 1 in 6 people in NYC is food insecure. We're grateful for compassionate friends like you who are showing these neighbors that they are not alone and that someone cares! If you haven't already joined our campaign, it's not too late. Be part of the longest-running Thanksgiving meal celebration in #NYC! Donate, start a fundraiser to provide meals or invite someone in need to our Thanksgiving feast: https://lnkd.in/gU8wKm9K #ThanksgivingAtTheMission #HHWeek #CommunityImpact #BoweryMission #Hope

"It's heartening to be with our daily guests, for whom this day can be so difficult, but also to reconnect with former guests who come back, sharing about their newfound stability, like living in their own apartments for years. It’s a beautiful time filled with stories of redemption and compassion." Thank you, veterans, for your service ?? Today, we honor the men and women in our Bowery Mission family who've served — like Steven. Raised in a military family, Steven joined the Navy and faced the battles of war in Iraq. But coming home, he struggled with PTSD, survivor’s guilt and severe anxiety, turning to substances to cope. One day, he was asked to sell drugs at a local shelter, but instead, he found himself at the Mission, where a pastor was speaking about forgiveness. That moment changed everything. Steven fought for his future, enrolling in (and then graduating) our Residential Program, and found a peace that surpasses all understanding. This Veterans Day, we’re grateful for their sacrifices and inspired by their strength. #VeteransDay #CommunityImpact #BoweryMission #BoweryHopeStory

Last week I shared my top tip for when you encounter a neighbor who is experiencing homelessness: find out their name as a way to respectfully connect and engage in conversation. To dig a little further into this, I thought I would share another tip that The Bowery Mission shares with those who are looking to connect with someone who may benefit from our services: Respect personal boundaries—both you and the person you are talking to deserve respect and safety.? ? You can honor their dignity by not touching them or asking overly invasive questions or making assumptions. Experiencing homelessness means a loss of privacy, so it’s important not to make them feel trapped by surrounding them with a group or hovering over them—instead ask for permission before kneeling or sitting down next to someone. ? If the person asks you a question you don’t want to answer, or asks you for something you don’t want to give, don’t be afraid to be honest about your boundaries. ? But please let the person know about The Bowery Mission and encourage them to come to us with their needs. I have heard from so many of our guests that a “stranger” was the catalyst in turning their life around, so I hope this tip helps to equip you as you reach out as a neighbor (or even as a stranger) to those in need.
