Who in your life has seen your flame sputtering and provided the spark you needed to stay lit? Who are the people who create an environment that allows you to burn brighter? Who are you grateful for? This week especially we focus on gratitude, and for a lot of us that can be one of our greatest struggles. Going into a holiday season feeling like you have nothing to be thankful for is one of the most quietly devastating things we can experience as a species that thrives on community, connection, and hope. Our hope for you all this week is to allow yourselves to feel any and all sparks that come your way. To stop and acknowledge them when they happen. If it's a person, tell them what that spark means to you. Call it out when you feel it, and share it with the ones who cause it. A spark only has a chance when you feed it. ____________________ Need some inspiration this season? New to the Press Page! Military Times opinion piece: Why the military's approach to its suicide epidemic is failing. Read the full article now! https://lnkd.in/eU3r88q9 ________________________________ "The term “resilience” has, unfortunately, become a four-letter word in the military lexicon, with the focus on resiliency more of a buzzword than an actionable strategy.... ...when the concept of resilience becomes a blanket expectation rather than a practical support system, it risks doing more harm than good. Ultimately, fixing the military suicide epidemic requires a new approach — one that redefines leadership, revamps training and fosters an environment of openness and mutual support. Only then will we begin to reverse the devastating trend of military suicides and create a system that truly supports the men and women who serve our country." - Ken Falke

When you love and appreciate yourself, you can love and appreciate life. You can begin to see all the areas that need attention, focus, and care - you see the things that need to change so the human you're responsible for can grow and thrive. You deserve 100% of your energy to get yourself where you want and need to be. You were given a human to take care of. What are you doing today to take care of that human? _____________________ #selfcare #THISisPTG #lovingyourselffirst #PTG #PosttraumaticGrowth #WarriorPATHH #StruggleWell #ChooseGrowth #mentalhealth #mentalwellness #militarymentalhealth #militarywellness #veteranmentalhealth #veteranwellness #firstrespondermentalhealth #firstresponderwellness credit Matthew Hussey @thematthewhussey

Executive Director @ Big Red Barn Retreat | Helping Heroes Thrive

Imagine standing on the shore, looking out at the vast ocean ahead, knowing you’re about to embark on a voyage. Epictetus, the stoic philosopher, likened life to this very experience. He said life is like preparing for a sea journey—you can carefully choose your crew, map your destination, and decide the best time to set sail. But once you're on the water, you don’t control the waves, the wind, or the storms. All you control is your reaction to them. This timeless wisdom reminds us that?life’s preparation is in our hands, but the journey will always be full of surprises. Choose your?crew?wisely: Surround yourself with people who uplift, challenge, and support you. Map your?destination: Have a clear sense of purpose, knowing where you want to go. Set your?course: Take action, step forward, and commit to the journey. But here’s the hard truth:?once you set sail, life happens.?The calm seas will inspire you. The storms will test you. The winds will redirect you. And in every moment, your response—not the circumstances — determines whether you arrive stronger, wiser, and closer to your destination. In the face of adversity, ask yourself: Will I let the storm break me, or will I adjust my sails? Will I curse the wind, or will I harness its power? Will I cling to fear, or will I trust my preparation and my crew? Epictetus teaches us that our power lies in this: choosing how we react and what meaning we give to what happens.?Life’s sea will not always be calm, but every wave teaches us something. So, as you navigate your voyage, remember that the goal is not just to reach the destination but to become the kind of sailor who thrives on the open sea. ??? How will you face the waves today? New to the Press Page! Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eHRYwqUD ______________________ Highlights: For many veterans, transitioning from active duty to civilian life is both a challenge and an opportunity. For more than 12 years, Juan Pizaro served in combat arms and special operations units in the U.S. military. Now a Master of Social Work student at UNC Charlotte, Pizarro is using everything he has learned about mental health to help his fellow servicemen. As a UNC Charlotte student, Pizarro is translating his experiences into meaningful advocacy for mental health and resilience. His passion is rooted in the transformative power of post-traumatic growth, a term coined by UNC Charlotte researchers Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun, which was central in the Warrior PATHH program. Pizarro showcased the impact of post-traumatic growth in the University’s 3-Minute Thesis competition. He outlined how to integrate post-traumatic growth into military education starting at basic training. Pizarro noted many soldiers enter the military with high adverse childhood experiences scores, which can be compounded through combat or simulated combat in the military. “The highest cause for death in the military is still suicide,” Pizarro said. “At this point, it is worth acknowledging that we have soldiers who come in with trauma, we compound that trauma, and when it’s too much for soldiers, we kick them out.” #militarymentalhealth #militarywellness #supportmilitary #veteranmentalhealth #veteranwellness #supportveterans #THISisPTG #PTG #posttraumaticgrowth #UNCCharlotte #WarriorPATHH #StruggleWell
