As the close of 2024 creeps upon us, the reasons to stay home and mix a good cocktail increase. And no bar is complete without a bottle of Angostura bitters. A 200 year old mistake. That’s what you’re looking at when you see the oversized label on a bottle of Angostura bitters. A mistake that became iconic. It was the result of the Siegert brothers rushing to enter their bitters in a competition all the way back in 1824. One brother got the bottles, the other the labels. They realized the size-mismatch too late to do anything about it. They lost the competition, but one of the judges suggested they keep the odd fitting label as a signature look. They listened. Today, Angostura is the global market leader in cocktail bitters, with an estimated 90% market share. This story inspires us to think: How do you plan an accident? By injecting some of this energy into our process for more disruptive results. Google tapped us recently to drive the identity for Be Internet Awesome World, the new Roblox adaptation of their online safety education program for kids. It was a smart evolution, translating these crucial (and fun!) safety lessons into an immersive and entertaining format on a platform where about 80 million people every day are already spending their time. In designing this identity – including logos and lockups for the games, along with splash screens and character illustrations – we brought young gamers into themed areas like Kind Kingdom, Mindful Mountain, Reality River, and the Tower of Treasure, where they learned different aspects of online safety like spreading kindness and protecting personal information. Since launching in September, the experience has been played close to 3 million times and counting. It's Ep 2 of Both&Yes Staff Picks. Our likes, and loves, in links. As people who work in/on digital products but aren’t what you’d call terminally online, we’re interested in what happens when an idea breaks contain and reaches people beyond the expected audience. Which is why this piece “The Crisis of Legibility” by Ruby Justice Thelot survived for so long on one of our open tabs. Our strategy brains light up when we see people searching for sharper, more illustrative language to pick apart the goings-on of online life. In this case that means concepts and terminology like “cultural half-life” and “digitally mediated legibility”. In the former case it’s about measuring relevance against penetration, and in the latter it’s a consideration of clarity against constraint. We're excited to introduce Both&Yes Staff Picks. Our likes, and loves, in links. Some of us are tracking the progress of Hurricane Helene this week. For that, we turn to the Waffle House Index, which is terrifically unusual and totally on point (in addition to having one of the best Wikipedia entries this side of Patrick Swayze). The brilliance of this metric is in its simplicity: the severity of a storm can be gauged by whether Waffle Houses in its path are open or closed. Because there are three defining characteristics of Waffle Houses: (1) They are adored (2) They can be wonderfully chaotic (3) They are OPEN every hour every day all year. To quote a former head of FEMA: “If you get there and the Waffle House is closed? That’s really bad.” We love thinking about this metric because it’s built on an unexpected insight that’s undeniably true and rooted at the intersection of human behavior, corporate values, and hot breakfast.
