The S&P 500 Index rose in the third quarter and has now rallied more than 50% since the low of the market sell-off in 2022. Markedly different from the preceding 18 months, however, was that gains were spread more broadly among a diverse set of sectors and companies. In our commentary, we cite the Federal Reserve’s policy shift and interest rate cut as key to driving equity and bond prices higher. With inflation nearing the Fed’s long-term target, the monetary policy body turned its attention to the other half of its dual mandate: full employment. Though the labor market has begun to normalize after a period of exceptional strength and consumers are feeling some pressure otherwise, the economy remains on solid footing. The Fed beginning to lower rates amidst this backdrop gives us confidence that the current period of economic expansion will continue. That said, significant geopolitical tensions, the forthcoming US elections, and other economic crosscurrents make today’s market environment more uncertain than usual.
