Our report: Of any major US city, Boston is the most dependent on property tax to fund its operating budget. Revenue diversification would allow the city greater financial flexibility to respond to changes in the financial landscape while maintaining services, and it should be an essential part of Boston’s financial strategy moving forward. https://lnkd.in/e5PZyiAk

Our view: The Boston Municipal Research Bureau believes this is a wise compromise, albeit a short term one that calls upon all of us to focus on additional measures to protect both residential and commercial property owners such as restraining spending increases and incentivizing economic development. https://lnkd.in/enCZbRNB

Smiles all around last night at Boston Municipal Research Bureau's annual Shattuck Awards! I have the honor of serving on the Boston Water & Sewer Commission. Last night, BWSC's Robert Limardo was celebrated as one of Boston's best! Members of the BWSC team are pictured here with strong Shattuck Awards supporter Pierce Haley. Grateful to all who make this evening possible. Especially James Tierney for hosting me so I could cheer the awardees on! Read more about these amazing Bostonians here: https://lnkd.in/e_GESAiY

For the past several years, I’ve had the pleasure of co-hosting the Boston Municipal Research Bureau's Henry L. Shattuck Awards which honor the unsung heroes who make Boston the extraordinary city it is. These individuals elevate public service through their deep dedication, immense contributions, and humble spirit. Last night, we celebrated the 39th Shattuck Awards, recognizing eight remarkable winners: Tim Bradeen, Jane Kelly, Michael Kerr, Bob Limardo, Gary Marino, Brian McGlaughlin, Lorraine Schettino, and Tracy Wiggins. These honorees enhance many facets of our city including: transportation, public schools and libraries, city planning, public safety, facilities, water and sewer, our city council and more. Each individual has a powerful story - and each makes a significant impact every day. We also presented the rare Chairman’s Award to Boston EMS Chief Jim Hooley, who received a standing ovation for his decades of life-saving service. Each year, we also honor two City Champions—leaders from the business and nonprofit sectors who have made a significant difference in the lives of Boston residents. This year, we recognized Fidelity’s Pamela Everhart, whose work has promoted financial literacy and ensured equitable access to higher education, and Dr. Michael Curry, President and CEO of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, for his leadership and advocacy in ensuring healthcare access for all. Mayor Michelle Wu delivered heartfelt remarks, celebrating all of the honorees, highlighting their invaluable contributions to Boston and the profound impact they’ve had on the community. As I stood on stage, watching hundreds of family, friends, colleagues, government officials, and community leaders celebrate these extraordinary individuals, I was truly moved by how united we all were in our gratitude. It reminded me of how fortunate we are to have such dedicated public servants in our community.
