BMC Health System is proud to have co-hosted the 2025 Black Family Wellness Expo — a day dedicated to supporting physical, mental, and financial health. Part of a nationwide day of impact, the event united healthcare providers, community leaders, and local organizations to offer expert-led presentations, hands-on services, and valuable opportunities for families to take charge of their health. In partnership with the Middlesex County Chapter of The Links, Inc., teams were present to provide essential resources such as mental health care, suicide prevention, and prostate cancer screenings. The event also featured impactful presentations on advancing cancer care from BMC’s Cancer Center, demystifying menopause from, and down payment assistance programs for first-time homebuyers. When chef and owner of Moonshine 152, Asia Mei, needed hip replacement surgery, she immediately turned to BMC for her care. “They had been highly recommended, and a lot of regulars at my restaurant work there, so I felt comfortable at BMC and in really good hands.” She felt that the team was communicative and helped build a care & rehabilitation plan centered around her unique needs. BMC’s Dr. Hannah Brown and Dr. Brittany Gouse are leveraging data from over 200,000 healthcare encounters to better understand the impact of social and environmental factors on early psychosis outcomes. Through the ACCESS initiative, they aim to close treatment gaps and develop more personalized, community-based interventions—ensuring patients receive the care they need, when and where they need it. BMC researchers have advanced to Round 2 of #STATMadness, a competition by STAT to recognize the most innovative research institution in the country! Meet our participating researcher Valerie Gouon-Evans, Pharm.D., Ph.D, who investigates how cell therapy can restore the liver’s ability to regenerate after damage. Her research has shown that mRNA technology can efficiently promote liver regeneration, and if translated to clinical practice, transplanting liver cells could serve as a potential alternative to a traditional organ transplant. Dr. Gouon-Evans was drawn to BMC and BU's Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM) for its cutting-edge expertise in induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which are made from the donated skin or blood cells of adults and genetically reprogrammed back to an embryonic stem cell-like state. New research, led by BMC's Gen Guyol, MD, MAT, provides insights into how families can support early child development. “Our findings underscore the critical role that family routines and parental supports play in shaping early child development. By fostering predictability, such as through consistent household routines and spending dedicated time together, parents can create an environment that supports their child’s readiness for school." Drawn to BMC's mission to advance the future of care, their research evaluates a clinical guideline aimed at promoting evidence-based addiction care by reforming child protective services (CPS) reporting practices for substance-exposed newborns. Congratulations to mentor Hannah Brown, MD, and mentee Brittany Gouse, MD/MPH of BMC’s Wellness and Recovery After Psychosis (WRAP) program for being awarded The Kempf Fund Award for Research Development in Psychobiological Psychiatry from the American Psychiatric Association! The award recognizes a senior researcher who has made a significant contribution to research on the causes and treatment of schizophrenia as both a researcher and a mentor.
