  • BMC is emerging as a leader in incorporating holistic nursing and integrative medicine into patient care. Integrative medicine combines conventional medical treatments with complementary, non-pharmacological therapies, including mind-body interventions and stress management methods, such as mindfulness, meditation, and Reiki. “In some ways, integrative nursing is like the pure heart of nursing. It is looking at patients as a whole person,” says Nancy Gaden, DNP, RN, FAAN, BMC's Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer. • Please help us congratulate Dr. Karri Weisenthal on her recent “New Faculty Excellence” award from Boston University Medical Group! Dr. Weisenthal joined BMCs emergency department (ED) in 2024 after completing a residency in emergency medicine and a fellowship in addiction medicine, both at Boston Medical Center. “Dr. Weisenthal is a rising star,” wrote Chief of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Christian Arbelaez, in his nomination. “She is a committed and compassionate clinician, a devoted educator, and has already implemented several department-wide and system-wide programs to improve care for patients who struggle with addiction.” Learn more about what drives Dr. Weisenthal and why she loves BMC: ?? What does “excellence in care” mean to you? ?? It means meeting every patient exactly where they are — medically, emotionally, and socially — and working together to develop a plan that respects their unique circumstances. It’s about pairing clinical expertise with true compassion. In emergency medicine and addiction care, “excellence” means never giving up on patients, ensuring they feel safe and heard, and advocating for them within a healthcare system that historically hasn’t always served them well. ?? How do you provide patient-centered care? ?? By recognizing that every patient comes with different experiences and histories — including experiences of trauma — that shape how they interact with the healthcare system. My team strives to create an atmosphere where patients feel safe, respected, and empowered. ?? What’s special about working at BMC? ?? It’s the commitment to serving our community, advocating for patients with complex needs, and constantly evolving our practice to be more inclusive and compassionate. At BMC, I feel empowered to innovate, collaborate, and truly make a difference. ?? What is “rewriting healthcare”? ?? Rewriting healthcare is challenging the status quo and constantly asking, “How can we do better?” It involves dismantling stigmas, especially around substance use disorders, and building care models that are more flexible, equitable, and patient-centered. It’s about giving patients the tools, support, and empathy they need to make healthy choices—on their own terms.

BMC's Child Life Program provides expert, wraparound care to help pediatric patients and their families navigate medical experiences. Child life specialists aim to reduce the stress and fear that medical experiences can have on children through preparation, procedural and psychosocial support, and opportunities for play. Meet Jenna Hartling, MS, CCLS, a certified child life specialist in the pediatric emergency department. She uses honest, developmentally tailored language to help children understand aspects of their care, such as IVs and sutures, and supports them throughout the process. This approach helps children build trust in the healthcare system. Outside of work, Jenna enjoys embroidery, crafting with her Cricut, and running.
